Ransium. we have come to you on behalf of California. we are a child-nation of Sequoia forests.
when your fine region and ours exchanged embassies, our parent-nation decided that our two region might establish a special relationship if we came here to live here - with your permission of course. the arrival of your own representative Bristlecone pine in California strengthened our resolve. today we finally were deemed old enough to leave our garden nursery and move here.
we do not intend to be very active especially at first while we learn to know your region and its customs better. if you have any objections to our presence please let us know, and of course if you have questions about us we will be glad to answer them if we can.

Thank you! Our mission is to become a part of Forest, a living link between our two regions. For us trees, to sink our roots into your soil and draw life from it is how we commune with your native trees and join ourselves to you. It binds our trees and yours in union of our life forces. It also binds our regions together in union. Among us trees this is like humans becoming families. It will be up to your humans and those of California to find ways of being united, although we understand you do not have our ability to share life. But this will be the next best thing.

Hello everyone. Back from Southern Arizona. The fire, named the Horseshoe 2 Fire I was on was huge almost a quarter of a million acres. It had burnt almost an entire mountain range, the Chiracahaus. I was helping with the post fire restoration effort. Much of the fire burnt at high intensity and even the soils looked toasted down to bare mineral soil, a loss that will be felt for a very long time. It was also very impressive to see southeastern Arizona's monsoonal rains. I witnessed (from a safe distance) the impressive flash flooding that can happen in Arizona (more people die of flash floods in the United States then any other outdoors related accident; always be aware of the time of year and local weather phenomenon when hiking in or near a dry creek bed, especially in the Southwest!). I also saw the massive amount of erosion caused by a severe fire over a large area followed immediately by a strong storm. All in all, it was a good experience, but I'm glad to be back home.

Thank you. Fire can be such a terrible thing, so many trees damaged and destroyed. It is good that you were able to help.
As for growing large, well - it is what we do, right? :-) We are pleased that we have been welcomed do it in this region.

Small wildfires are a good thing to thin the forest, remove debris, and create small open spaces. Obviouly fires this large bring only destruction.

I'm glad to see that you guys are aware of the issues of fires role in the west. As you well know Sacred Sequoia Trees, Giant Sequoia's require bare mineral soil created by fire to regenerate. However, the hundred thousand plus acre conflagrations becoming increasingly common in the west with increasing fire severity are IMO one of the greatest threats (working in synergy with climate change and bark beetles) to most western montane forests. When Native American's managed western forests there were extremely frequent and generally low severity fires. Although there were small patches of high severity even then, these patches likely compromised only a maximum of 10-15% of the burnt area and individual patches were likely generally only 1-4 acres in size maximum. A big enough opening for a pine or sequoia, but not huge. Now fires can be hundreds of thousands of acres and greater than 50% high severity, with patches of high severity hundreds of acres in size. It will take most western forests a long time to recover from such fires because its inconsistent with their historical fire regime. In fact in a "sky island" (ie mountains and montane forests not connected to a larger chain of mountains) like the Chirachaus in southeastern Arizona, where the forests are largely relics of the last ice age, I fear that reestablishment of forest will be on the order of centuries if ever in some parts of the mountain.

@Ransium: of course you are right, we require the kind of fires that come in the natural cycles and from the tending of those who have understood us. We have suffered much from fires caused by the folly and malice of the ignorant. We carry in our collective mind the old thoughts of many brother-forests who lost their forms at the hands of cruel and stupid humans.

?^^ just wondering if your going to stay in character the whole time. But also upvote on forest fires= badness, controlled ones would make sense but out of control ones are just senseless.

As for fire, Ransium already made the point well that we depend on fires in our forests, but the ones that help us are naturally caused and are very limited in their nature. It is unusual for a fire not caused by human carelessness to seriously damage us.
In character, Fijonia? We are young trees it is true, but we are from a very ancient culture, tens of thousands of years old. We do not have the knowledge or inclination for being anything other than what we are. We had our orientation for being among humans before moving here, but we have not had training to be more like other species, human or otherwise. Give us time. We may learn if it looks interesting. But for now we are as you find us.

Hera, we are trees, not tiny animals. We do not "wander". We do not change quickly. Do you realize that we still have living memory, passed from what the minds of our ancestors, of the time when the star you call your pole star was not over your north pole? We will be here as long as we are welcome.
