Err...You brewed beers?? Wow!

Yeah, I've worked (and still work) at a few different local breweries in the past few years. One of them let me toy around with brewing. It was fun and the end result was nice, but I think I prefer letting others handle the brewing.

But also by being a vexillophile nerd, even as a little kid. My office walls have 14 national flags on them. The shelves and whatnot have mini flags for the other 200 or so countries in the world.

Designing a national flag for a country based on my wife was what made me even want to make a new NationStates account. Then it was kind of like "Now what...". So I made flags for the dozen or so cities I had. And then came the maps, and the currency, and more cities and more flags.

The notebook I have at home detailing the 26 year history for the 6 league Reannian football ladder is basically some serial killer level stuff...

Shameless plug, but you should roleplay your league (or just post tables) in the newswires! viewtopic.php?f=7&t=3108&start=6975 there are programs to help you generate new results from old.

I've looked through that before and considered it, but I'm not really seeing a point. It just looks like another one of those threads that people post their own stuff in and then ignores everyone else's.

Which I understand. A lot of that is a bit TOO detailed to really read through and take interest in. Even with my short blurbs, I cant imagine anyone caring enough to read it, lol.

Maybe I'll give it another thought though.

We tend not to directly reply to other peoples' posts, but a lot of people send players to other leagues and follow along with, for instance, their foreigners' progress. (Current transfers: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/15D5NbZa-P2dqB678gnNY30aux3XL_wi8aSQc_UzN7Tg/edit#gid=790209026)

So a lot of the feedback/commentary is done in chat rooms, TGs, discussion thread. viewtopic.php?f=7&t=2447

Again, no pressure!

I'll give it some thought. Interacting with other leagues may be interesting. Although I dont really have any set pace for when I get stuff done. The past season took me 3 months to work through, while the previous two seasons I finished in 2 weeks.

Also, I have a bizarre way of generating results, based on a long series of coin flips at random.org, so results are completely random. Thus, a team that won the championship one year may be relegated the next. In fact, only two if the original 20 top level teams have never been relegated. Teams from the 6th league have made it to the top level championship. It's pretty unrealistic, but I cant bring myself to reboot the leagues and change my formula after 26 seasons of doing it this way.

I feel like the complete lack of control would put a lot of people off.

Looking back at my history, given the randomness, it's amazing how many teams actually have multiple championships, even consecutive wins.

Zwangzug, Lord Dominator, Turbeaux, Canaltia, and 1 otherThe mongol forest

Although the thought of some sort of reboot with a little control is nice. Having so many of my major market teams skulking around in low level leagues is a bit frustrating...

As long as you are a member of Forest, the Rejected Realms, or one of our embassy regions with access to posting on our RMBs you can participate. Each RMB will feature a thematically different story with different characters so if you can, you are encouraged to participate in both.

When

The opening paragraphs for each narrative will be posted on the respective RMBs on February 21st, 2019 at 12:00 AM GMT and the event will last until February 25th, 2019 at 12:00AM GMT.

Rules

  • When adding to the story, quote the previous entry and add a number. This is so we can keep track of the stories in a logical way. For example

  • Don't double post for the story

  • Please keep things PG-13 and follow site rules!

  • Please do not ruin either story with implausible events and try to stay within the story's universe

  • Have fun!

Sneak Preview of Starting Paragraphs

In case you wanted to know what the stories will be about and start brainstorming some ideas see below.

Mielikki woke up in a cold sweat after having a dream that her favorite maple tree had been destroyed by a rogue lumberjack. She saw a flickering orange glow lighting her room and was able to easily find and put on her glasses before looking out the window to see that her prized maple was ablaze. This realization made her feel like her stomach was being eaten by snakes. She had planted the maple as a small child and grown up with it. She had her first kiss under its ruddy canopy. She cannot remember who she kissed there many decades ago but had become to consider this tree to be her best friend. She had watched her son play under it before the incident. She grabbed her cane and rushed outside to futilely attempt to douse the flames with her garden hose. Despite failing to stop the blaze its light revealed a gas can, a lighter, and footprints leading away from the tree toward the woods. A sense of resolve grew in her. She went back inside and asked her wise old spider plant if she should follow the footprints and get revenge on the arsonist after sunrise. The spider plant whispered, 'Do it if your arthritis won’t stop you! You should go for a walk in the woods in any case because it will calm you."

The march out of town was mostly quiet. Not surprising for such an awkward endeavor. Every year, the young lives of all those who had completed all the years of their formal education were evaluated based on how they fit in with the community and the order of things. Free thinkers, with radical ideas were nothing but troublemakers in the eyes of the elders. The community had been ravaged by power struggles in the past and so the elders designed this process to weed out the biggest rebels and misfits. On this day, the misfit in question was a boy named Adam. Despite the warnings of his parents throughout his childhood, he couldn’t help his inquisitive, opinionated nature. And so Adam was being escorted out to the woods miles from the community, banished forever. They finally arrived at the edge of the vast woodlands and stopped. One of the armed escorts asserted gruffly, “The penalty for contacting or returning to the community is death. Good luck”. And then they left.

The dispatch should answer most of your questions. I do not have a problem with you using multiple nations as long as you let others post in between your paragraphs, but you could just use your main here and your other nation in the Rejected Realms.

Nice! Good job!

For those who want to get a custom flag - you may send a telegram to me! I draw flags for free :)

List of flags what I made on this site:
Lesnak asked for flag with yellow, green and white. Flag in use.

__________________________________________________________________

Golden Scar asked: Anything but make it communism themed So i made this.
But Golden Scar have been really busy to change flag for new one.

__________________________________________________________________

Trap_o_bell ask: Could you do something with like tacos, aliens, communism and anything else?
He liked my first idea without tacos, so flag in use.

__________________________________________________________________

I get card of Tarcax oxide. And tried to make flag in better quality:

But Tarcax oxide said: Flag is as intented. This flag was never meant to be crisp
So i try one more time:

But Tarcax oxide has his own idea and likes his own flag. And that is good! Well done!

__________________________________________________________________

Also I get card of Ormusqand and tried to make it's flag in better quality:

Queen Ariel Sus-Ormusqand thanked me and now flag in use.

__________________________________________________________________

Flag for Timao.
Nothing to describe - it was flag of Corinthians Paulista, but in low quality and rotated - I just update it.

__________________________________________________________________

New flag for Cafevodka. Just put a little part of Irish pub on Irish flag. :)

__________________________________________________________________

Flag for CRlSPR. But we quarreled, so I wouldn't finish this flag...

__________________________________________________________________
For Ancient Whispers I made someting. Ancient Whispers ask for purple color, so we got:

Seagull ask: "I want to keep the circling stars and the seagull", so i made this:

__________________________________________________________________
For Caracasus - I just updated flag.

__________________________________________________________________
And I can draw a random flag - just give me 8 digits.
For example 09123235

__________________________________________________________________

My own flag was made fast and easy.

I will be happy to make flags for anyone!

The new bluestocking homeland

Forgive the double-post, but this is a completely different topic (so I hope you let me off), namely: International Women's Day, which is on the 8th March.

In the spirit of acknowledging the achievements of women across history -- and as part of my idea for a regional activity to celebrate the day -- which Uan has kindly given his blessing for me to proceed in -- I have a question for all you lovely Forest people:

Who are your female heroes?

What woman/women inspire you the most?

On the 24th of this month, I aim to have a poll up, so we can vote on Forest's favourite female heroes, which will then become a dispatch (to be put out -- all being well -- on International Women's Day).

Female heroes
Early vote for Emmy Noether, a German mathematician from the first third of the twentieth century. Noether's Theorem on the existence of conservation laws in mathematical physics is one of the fundamental rules of the subject. She also did more than any other person to develop a major branch of algebra called ring theory, which studies systems in which you can do something analogous to addition, subtraction and multiplication but not division. The simplest example of a ring is the integers without fractions, but rings of various kinds are everywhere in mathematics and the classification of their structure depends crucially on Noether's work.

It was extremely difficult then for a woman to hold an academic position and Noether worked without pay or recognition during the period in which she published the theorem that bears her name. Eventually she got to teach at Gottingen, although her courses were registered to male colleagues who recognised her importance. Just as she was making some headway against one form of prejudice, Hitler came to power and, being Jewish, she had little choice but to join the exodus of academics to America that included Einstein. She died in 1935 from complications to what should have been routine surgery. She was 53.

Rings that are "nice" in terms of their structure and properties (ie they satisfy a technical condition identified by Noether) are called Noetherian. The Noetherian Ring is also the name of an international society for female mathematicians.

Emmy Noether is a fantastic choice :)

In the same vein, I'd like to nominate one of my academic foremothers, Grete Hermann. She studied abstract algebra (which is how I know of her work), but also wrote on the philosophy of quantum mechanics, edited a socialist newspaper, and helped build the social democratic party in postwar Germany. http://www.frauen-im-aufbruch-ausstellung.de/en/women/grete-henry-hermann/
