Hello Lon Kra Con. You are most welcome to Philosophers, still very new as you see. We will be having conversations on matters philosophical, but also trivial. (I’m here after all.)

Our colleague Rosa damascena has attached a dispatch in the World Factbook Entry .- You are a philosopher that I find inspiring and helpful. I will refer to it again, Rosa.

Hello Sunrise Trail and Lon Kra Con. I like the place already. So what do you think, when the next instalment of the virtual world tour poll comes around, should I post it here?

Oh yes. It will attract visitors.

In Philosophy 115 I enjoyed reading posts, most of which I ended up agreeing with, or at least seeing the merit in because they were well-reasoned. The divergence of opinion didn’t bother me because it was interesting to hear different points of view.

At my Montreal university I read French Literature, not to high academic standard, but it was fun to read novels and pretend that was studying. In Philosophy it appears that academics tend to fall into two schools, analytic and continental. It seems important to know this because outside the profession there’s mostly Ayn Rand and the like. Is it a division that helps or hinders?

I ask these questions because it’s helpful to have a framework for discussion. In my youth I read Bertrand Russell and think he represents the analytic school? He was a famous philosopher, but it occurs to me that non-academic writers like Sartre and Camus could be said to represent continental thinking?

Does any of this matter? (Asking for a friend.)

Greetings Sunrise Trail and Rosa damascena! A journey of 10,000 steps starts with one step, and this is already beginning to feel like home. This nation started in Forest and has been staying in Middle Earth most recently, so it may be time to update my theme. Ents are no doubt wise and philosophers in their own right, but not what I have in mind for this region. I'll have to think of something - no need to hurry though.

Here we are, that’s a beginning.

Could be? As I haven't studied Philosophy, I'm not familiar with the current academic landscape. I just like asking questions. :) What I also like is reading articles from all sorts of fields of study, written to be understood by the general public. So I hope we can share and talk about some items that catch our interest. On subjects of long lasting relevance, beyond the haste of daily news. Maybe the wandering ents of Lon Kra Con can say something about various schools of present day philosophy, otherwise one day, who knows, someone might come along who can give an overview.

We already have a blue sky banner. How about a regional flag like this - until something better comes along? If you like it, I'll reduce the pixels and upload it here. Or perhaps one of you has a different flag idea?

I like that. Yes, please.

To be honest, I had to look up the differences. The main one appears to be that analytics believe in an objective reality outside the existence of humans, whereas continentals do not. Is it a useful distinction? Like any distinction when we attempt to define something, it has its uses and its limits. It helps when you learn that Sarte was a continental philosopher and immediately know something about his philosophy. It interferes when you assume you know more about Sarte's philosophy than you do because of the label. In terms of differentiating schools (or families?) of philosophical thought, though, the nature of existence seems to be a good place to start. It is a "natural line of fracture", a term I first encountered in reading BF Skinner. Which gives me an idea...

Welcome all! Lon Kra Con's puppet here. I'll be taking over for Treebeard in this region so he can return to Middle Earth and keep searching for the entwives once this region is settled.

Hello to you, Mr Skinner!

How about this look? The banner is a sky motif too, but a custom one in a colour scheme similar to the question mark flag.

Edit:

Showcasing a varied collection factbooks from our friends, because they deserve a read.

What shall our embassies policy be? The initial exchanges have been with regions I’m connected with, but we have had a few more. Are we relaxed except for no nazis, no raiders? Or do we want to be more selective?

Hi all,

So very glad we have this new and exiciting region where we can again attract the brighest and best to our ideals of openness, critical thought, and insights. It is my earnest hope that the we can create some of magic that we had in P115 again and have debate, fun, and a little heat from time to time, even, in some thought provoking writing.

To the future.

So glad to have you with us Lat duhran.

Sunrise Trail I've always been a solo player. Never engaged in discourse here or joined the WA, never got the hang of it completely. I am interested to try it out and be a more active participant.

I'd be interested in hearing about this from you, and perhaps also various people who have been/are responsible for embassies in different regions. Please share your experiences and practices. Checking potential and existing embassies can be a lengthy and tiresome process. It's sometimes easy to overlook things, and regions can change. You've named the two things that are dealbreakers.

Open questions could be for example:

Quality over quantity? Or quantity over quality?
Actively seek out embassies?
Sit back and wait passively for random incoming requests?
Both?

What about:
- very new regions
- regions that request lots of embassies at the same time
- regions that provide very little information on what they are about
- embassy collecting regions that build up sheer numbers without any quality control whatsoever
- regions that welcome players who have acquired a reliable bad reputation on other platforms, but which can not be acted on on this website (for example harassment)
- regions that allow members to post hatred against specific groups of people
- regions that don't invade but routinely welcome or applaud invaders or have invaders in charge
Any further region tags we should avoid?
Any region tags we should perhaps seek out?
page=list_regions
When might be a good time to contact remaining existent Philosophy 115 embassy regions?
Do we ask regions that request new embassies what their embassy policy is?

stonks

Embassies: Thanks, Rosa damascena. Good points to consider.

I have preferred quality over quantity, especially regions that are good friends. At this stage we are too new and small to be making requests. Old friends who understand the situation have contacted us. I agree that we should avoid embassy collectors.

We do want to be noticed and attract new members. I would suggest we wait till we’re bigger and better known before approaching other regions, unless we know them well, and to accept requests from any established, active region unless there’s a reason not to (raiders, nazis, embassy collectors).

Region tags can be misleading. Some regions tag themselves LGBT or Feminist to show solidarity - great - but that’s not their primary concern. In our case, I assume we would not want to tie ourselves down with tags. At the moment, we’ve been given the tag small, which seems fair enough.

The pandemic, like climate change requires a global solution. Fair statement?

The philosopher Bruno Latour says COVID is a “dress rehearsal for the ongoing ecological crisis”, and more luridly “a moment within the ongoing global ecological annihilation”.

Is it reasonable to draw the connection between the continued degradation of the environment and the outbreak of the pandemic?

While I agree that the pandemic requires a global response, as does the ongoing ecological crisis, I don't see any evidence that the ongoing ecological crisis will make further pandemics more likely. If we have any logicians among us, I am sure they could show precisely how this argument starts with a true premise but leads to an argument that may be true, but is certainly not necessarily true.

This is definitely a case where I would want to hear what the science has to say on the topic, or a philosopher who is also a scientist and who has studied the science closely. Perhaps Bruno Latour is such a philosopher?
