However, at that point I did not know yet wheter or not this would lead to a battle. Arguably, Cossack Peoples could just have asked you instead of me.

Admiral Panerelli stood in the bridge of The Aldington and looked at the battle map with satisfaction, Dernel had suffered casualties, but so did everyone else. Dernel had lost 20 Asi class patrol boats, all 4 of the Gram class cruisers front two railguns had been melted to uselessness, about 3 Excalibur class destroyers had been damaged by ATS missiles from Leonism. The other carrier, The Plaiedes had taken heavy damage from a volley that Leonism had aimed specifically at capital ships. Even with all this damage it wasn't much compared to the whole of the fleet, acceptable casualties. The leonists were on the run, for now. Even with this Panerelli wouldn't advance, he wanted to make it clear that we will only be playing the defensive game here. "You come to my home, you lose, I go to yours, I lose." Now with that he would send the damaged ships back to Dernel to be repaired and replaced by the other parts of the fleet waiting for deployment.

Custadia hadn't responded to previous telegrams, so I didn't feel like I would get an answer. And although Custadia is right in saying that not all things he did were with Leonism, there was no indication otherwise, so that's where the misunderstanding takes root.

And if Custadia did not head south with the Imperial battleground, then we'd have to change a few things, such as casualty reports.

Satanic empire

The Satanic Fleet arrives in the south, and moves to link up with its forces around the Island.

The three plastuns nearly went without resistance in The Sigometh Dynasty, apart from some border checkpoints they had to overwhelm and keep quiet for the time being. At the end of Wednesday the Eighth, Rostov had brought the army to bear at the construction site for the Marine of Leonism. Rostov himself, the grizzled lower general, inexplicably wished to ride on top of the artillery plastun’s mobile SAM vehicle with other soldiers, who he heckled about their conduct and unbecoming appearance of their uniforms.

Once the formation had stopped five kilometers from their destination at the shore, he hopped off and began to organize the seizure of the future facility. At noon, a light artillery barrage would target anything the VI-92 helicopters could spot, particularly any ships that could be used for evacuation. With WURCo. Type 9 Howitzers and their motorized counterparts ranging up to nearly fifteen kilometers, they would try and sink any hope of evacuation for the enemy in the base. The attack would begin in the evening as the infantry dismounted and armored vehicles fueled up.

Six Allianz class freighters were anchored near the shore or at the provisional harbour of the Imperial base construction site.

Each had had a crew of 90, meaning a total of 540 sailors were now at the base. In addition, the Nordstern and the Sturmtaube had carried the survivors from the two sunken freighters, Lachmöwe and Goldregen, in total an additional 143 men and women.

The sailors were all part of the Merchant Fleet, thus no professional soldiers, but instead reservists like all able-bodied Imperial citizens.

The freighters had not carried much in the way of military equipment: A standard issue M22A2 carbine for each crew member, twelve IWM PA-9 Panzerfaust anti-tank recoilless rifles, four ImpTec SSG14 sniper rifles and two ImpTec MG-11 machine guns.

Like in the naval battle that had just taken place, the LL9 portable point-defense lasers, of which each freighter had carried one, might play a key role. They were like a small scale version of the "Illuminator" class point defense laser, useful for intercepting grenades and rockets (but not bullets).

Other Imperial military assets at the site included a single F77 aerospace shuttle with a MedEvac team and six R44 aerospace superiority fighters from Epsilon-Green squadron, which had previously hunted the submarine in the Cossack Strait
They had been modified to carry torpedoes and sonar buoys, limiting the normally plentiful ordinance available against ground forces or aerial threats.

When the base personnel became aware of the incoming threat from over 1200 Cossack soldiers, they requested reinforcements immediately
But none would be able to reach them in time except for the two aerospace-craft in the Imperial Armed Forces that were capable of hypersonic travel: The F77 and the R44. F77s were still very expensive and rare, while R44s were more numerous but already needed in a lot of places.

Thus the only support on offer were three F77 shuttles carrying three Dekurien (30 men) of Imperiales Heer special forces, and a single Halbstaffel of 6 R44 fighters equipped for the fighter-bomber role.
They would arrive within the next hour.

Once again, a numerically inferior Imperial force would have to fend off more numerous Compact forces.

An interesting question was wheter the local The Sigometh Dynasty military would resist the blatant infringement of their territory by their northern neighbour, with which they had previously been on good terms.

It was remarkable how these two seemingly outdated designs, based mainly around naval artillery guns, had fared comparably well in this battle. The smaller Bremen class corvettes and the larger Pilum class missile cruisers had fared the worst. Two Dominator class carriers, prime targets for the Compact, had also been sunk. The Skylancer class frigates, possibly Ehler's most valuable assets, had all survived the battle largely unscathed, although the Fliegenfänger had lost most of its weapons.

When Raumwaffe scouts relayed new reconnaissance footage of Compact reinforcements from Greater catarapania, Ehler knew he had made the right decision. Withdraw, regroup, assess. The Imperium and its allies would ultimately have to win the war, not just one battle.

Looking again at the casualty reports and comparing them with the casualty assessments for the enemy fleet, Ehler was sure that this First Battle of the Strait had been a draw, or even a phyrric victory for the Compact...

Cianlandian ships from the 9th Fleet are still making their way South, but are far enough along that they can see smoke and ash still clouding the skies along the Strait, as their fellow Northern Allies, Leonism, and Custadia recover from battle.

General Broadcast

"My Southern Brothers. We stand here today after the first conflict of the North-South War. The Battle for the Strait has ended in a Compact victory. Truly, we are meant to be the saviors of the South. A guiding light for all southerners. Northern imperialism, however, is not yet crushed. Leonism still intends to build their colonial garrisons and have caused the New vedan Civil War to spiral even more out of control. I want to point out that it was a Leonist spy who killed Kragnorak, a candidate for the Presidency who wasn't very pro-internationalist, and they sabotaged the elections.

Even now, they seek to bring the war home. I say no. The Compact still stands. We are united in our goals of shared freedom. Of shared prosperity. Of hope for a Free South. A Compact that is built on brotherhood and is dedicated to defending all Southerners from the North. We will not hesitate and we will not waver. This war is not over. It will not be over until the Northerners have agreed to leave the South and take their garrisons with them. History will side with us and we hope that all who listen to this message side with our noble cause of freedom."

Aigania - Satanic empire BORDER. MIDNIGHT.

“Delta-9 to Border Control. Long range sensors have detected a group of slaves crossing into Aigania through the Smugglers Pass” “Roger" - "We will send a medical team inmediatly. Hold the position”. The decommissioned and refurbished tank rushed throughout the partially flooded swamp and thick vegetation.

“Look Mama, we are already there!” the tiny and emaciated girl whispered in the group as they were crawling toward the border. Alas it was too late. A Pit Lord riding a Nightmare has spotted them with his hunting Cerberus.
“RUN!!”

Delta-9 accelerated to the border, it cannot risk to cause an incident so it can only watch for the distance as the refugees run to the river with the demon approaching them lefting a trailblaze of fire.

“We are almost there!” they shouted, the Pit Lord has nearly reached them, Delta-9 was on the other side on top of a small hill. Then a howl thundered the night, a genetically engineered escaped dragon, waiting to the chance to cross to the Empire hiding beneath the waters, awakened by the magic of the Demon and launched towards the fleeing slaves with its mouth wide open. An orange flame began to form between its jaws.

“Delta-9 to Border Control. Red Alert. Enemy Detected. Primary Function. Protection of Lives”, “Target Adquired. Opening Fire.” and a blue streak of Cherenkov radiation trailed the plasma shot, filling the air with an ozone smell, towards the dragon. Unfortunately the Pit Lord shooted at the same time a mana enhanced fireball filling the air with a sulphurous stench towards the escaping slaves, while the Dragon was about to incinerate them.

I updated the War in the South dispatch with all the relevant posts from the last two days:

Beginning with this RMB post, the Southern Compact, consisting of Cossack Peoples, Glorious society, Dernel, Greater catarapania and Atlas orbis attacked The Imperium of Leonism, leading to war between them and the allied Northern states (Leonism, Custadia, Cianlandia, Loftegen 3).

This dispatch tries to keep track of the events, which take place in the Lazarus RMB. Only the RMB posts are definite, this dispatch serves as supplementary material to help visualising the events.

April 10, 2020:
A ground battle around the Imperial Omega Basis construction site is imminent:

Background of the conflict
Taken from a telegram to Snoodum, who asked the question about how the conflict came into being. The content is OOC!:

The origin of the tensions was the conflict between Mussoliniburg and New vedan on one side and Cossack Peoples and Danwaria on the other. It erupted in early December 2019, when Danwaria accused Mussoliniburg of using slave labour and threatened an intervention on humanitarian grounds. Cossack Peoples and New Vedan were also struggling for dominance over the strait that seperates their countries.

While the conflict was building, and before it turned into a shooting war, naval forces from Custadia and Leonism sailed into the strait to form a buffer between the Cossacks and New Vedan. The claims of Mussoliniburg using slave labour could never be properly verified, despite a black ops mission by Leonist forces in that country. When Danwaria CTEd, the conflict petered out. Yet Glorious society was very unhappy about the intervention by "Northerners", claiming it was an imperialist attempt to subjugate the "Southern" countries. Over the following months, Glorious Society used increasingly belligerent rhetoric towards "the North" and managed to form the "Southern Compact", an alliance between Dernel, Cossack Peoples and Glorious society that claimed to defend "the South" against "Northern imperialism". Since Custadia and Leonism had not removed their considerable fleets from the area, Glorious Society felt vindicated in their claims of imperialism, and called the presence of the fleets a "blockade" (which it never was, at no point had ports been blockaded or civilian ships stopped).

Yet in one event, the Custadian fleet allegedly sunk the Natalia Denisov, a Cossack freighter full of (fake) military supplies enroute to Onofria. This led to new tensions flaring up. With Leonism trying to establish a permanent foothold in the region, for its own trade and security interests and to be able to act as an independent force that can prevent conflicts from turning into a shooting war, the tensions reached new heights. A convoy with equipment for the construction of an Imperium naval base in the South was sent towards The Sigometh Dynasty, escorted by an enormous fleet because of fears that it will be attacked. The Southern Compact, recently reeinforced by new members Atlas orbis and Greater catarapania, wanted to prevent a permanent Imperial presence in the region at all costs.
Due to the Compacts belligerence against "the North", former rivals Custadia and Leonism have now joined forces and formed an alliance against the Compact.

Several days before the fleet reached the area, Glorious society indicated that it was willing to guarantee that the convoy will be left alone if the huge war fleet accompanying it stays away. The Imperium took their word, and sent 8 unaccompanied freigthers to the strait. They were attacked in the middle of the strait by a black-ops FRCPN submarine, with two freighters sunk.

In conjunction with this announcement, I would also like to remind you all to please
endorse our delegate, Treadwellia, endorse our Vice-Delegate, New Rogernomics and endorse the Security Auditors, Aflana, Custadia and Lazarene ryccia.

As the newest addition to the Security Council, I am especially in need of endorsements, as we aim to get the Auditors (Security Councillors) to an endorsement level of around 200 endos, and I am still at 132. So please endorse Leonism if you haven't already done so.

Then Endotart?

Admiral I. Klasse Ludwig Ehler and his fleet were now two hundred kilometers north of the site of the battle, still within range of long range Compact missile attacks. But the Compact had not pursued them, probably in fear of the nearby Custadian carrier battlegroups, and stray missiles were easily dealt with by the remaining point-defense lasers.

Ludwig Ehler led his shoulders drop and sighted. He looked at the final fleet status report post-battle:

  • 5 Imperator class battleships: 1 sunk (ISS Souverän, 2 recieved medium damage, 2 were lightly damaged

  • 20 Perzen class heavy cruisers: 3 sunk, 2 heavily damaged, 5 recieved medium damage, 4 lightly damaged, 6 undamaged

  • 8 Dominator class carriers, 2 sunk, 2 heavily damaged, 3 recieved medium damage, 1 undamaged

  • 44 Pilum class missile cruisers: 10 sunk, 5 heavily damaged, 11 recieved medium damage, 4 lightly damaged, 11 undamaged

  • 86 Protector class frigates: 13 sunk, 6 heavily damaged, 17 recieved medium damage, 10 lightly damaged, 40 undamaged

  • 6 Skylancer class defense frigates: 1 heavily damaged, 3 lightly damaged, 2 undamaged

  • 150 Bremen class corvettes: 30 sunk, 43 heavily damaged, 27 recieved medium damage, 25 lightly damaged, 25 undamaged

  • 19 Meteor class corvettes: 2 sunk, 4 heavily damaged, 3 lightly damaged, 10 undamaged

  • 6 Atlas class Fleet Support ships: 1 sunk, 1 heavily damaged, 2 recieved medium damage, 2 lightly damaged

  • 20 Goldesel class tankers: 4 sunk, 16 undamaged

In total, about a quarter of the Imperial Fleet had been sunk, the combat capability of the fleet had been reduced by roughly one third. The [i]Atlas[ /i] class fleet support ships, the five left of them, resupplied all ships with new ammunition and treated the wounded sailors. Several of the critically wounded had to be evacuated with F77 MedEvac shuttles.

The Admiral had also recieved word from the Imperial Navy Command that a replacement fleet was underway as they spoke. It would arrive in the Lirian Sea within a week, steaming south at full power.
