If the world united, it wouldn't even last a year. Any civil war in a society of that size would split it up in no time. The government would not be able to keep if with numerous rebellions that (if they are smart) would all be occuring at the same time.

Space Fascism is the only thing that'll unite the world. We need aliens to show up for us to translate our racial/class hatred onto the aliens. Then, many of the barriers will disappear to a new sense of Human nationalism, albeit probably under a tyrannical dictatorship.
