I feel like I confused the children of my neighborhood today because I've started wearing my mask.

That means they saw the Anti-Corona Cowboy walking his Big Black Dog at a socially safe distance.

The crew leader set out on the way to the nearest bar, where he was to inquire as to common sports events, the weather, and other mundane things. Having received directions from a bystander, he quickly arrived at his destination.

Bartender! A coffee, please! "Coming up, sir. Just a second."

Ever the patient type, the leader, using the assumed name of Larry, decided to strike up a conversation with his fellow patrons.

I'm telling you, man, you should focus on finding the double posters. You think you'll get anything useful from bargoers? Yeah, I'm sure half-drunk bums will have important cultural information for you. Be sure to write down anything you do find out.
Excuse me. Can I ask you a couple of questions?

Although no information about the double posting rot was forthcoming, Larry was able to accrue a considerable database of the local culture by playing along with the bar patrons' assumption that he was a foreign sociologist. They were technically correct.

Right, now that you've done with that, I have some more relevant information for you. We've found Case Zero. He's pretty near to you, so your new objective is to find him.
Thanking his new acquaintances for their cooperation, Larry took his coffee and, cringing as he took a sip, began searching for the source of the rot. If Case Zero could be found, maybe he could yield the names of all those he had infected. He hadn't yet considered how the rot was to be eliminated. Maybe they could just be quarantined aboard the Wardenate's vessels? No cure had been found yet, but one would be found in time, and the impact on innocent life would be minimized.

I know it's a bit short, but I'm trying to come up with this as it goes.

Well, it's an interesting idea. I'm just not sure if the boss will like seeing the rot aboard his vessel.
Larry had uploaded a novel report to the computer. His recommendation? That Double Posters be individually quarantined aboard Wardenate vessels either until a cure could be found, or else, if such a cure would be too difficult even for the Wardenate's supremely advanced technology and/or magic, until a totally uninhabited universe could be found that could be used as an infinitely large quarantine room, with monitoring so that the Double Posters could not achieve interdimensional travel. This arrangement could totally eliminate the incidence of contact with the rot; food and entertainment could be blinked into the quarantine rooms, with several force fields between the nearest inhabited panel and the rot.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
The sound of spat-out coffee echoed through Bill's quarters once again. Larry's report had, understandably, caused quite an uproar among the Voidwing's officers.

"This is totally unacceptable! There's too great a risk to the crew!" "Not if we have a specialized, otherwise-uninhabited panel for the quarantine." "A blink would be much safer, but..."

Alert: message from Universe <f@*. Vessel: Eldritch. Message: "Commander, computer, and crew gone rogue. Am only uninfected crewman. Send reinforcements. Commander spreading the rot." Message ends. Recommendation: recall landing parties, blink planet, and pursue infected ship.
The room was silent for a brief moment, the quiet broken by Bill rising from his chair and glancing at the computer's projected course and actions for the rogue vessel, the Eldritch. He took a deep sip of coffee and turned back to the table of officers, now done with their bickering.

"We have no choice, gentlemen. No matter our personal feelings in the matter, our priority is to stop the rot's spread. Computer, recall the landing party."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Urgent: all planetside crewmen are to return to the Voidwing immediately. Transportation blink will commence in three minutes.
Larry had been right outside Patient Zero's living space, pondering the optimal way to eliminate the rot without collateral damage. His report, it seemed, was not well-received. He took a few more pictures of the surrounding area, to preserve as much of the local culture as possible, and was blinked back to the ship. At length, the planet, which had been the subject of such an effort of preservation, had its core broken, instantly destroying its entire mass, as the Voidwing, with a great flash of light, blinked into Universe <f@*.
