Leonism wrote:The Invictus finished her sea trials a few days later than planned, but is now on course to visit Custadia tomorrow. Relations with the neighbouring nation have been lukewarm for quite some time, especially since the Imperium has massively upgraded its military capabilities, threatening Custadia's regional dominance in military matters. The diplomats on board the Invictus are hoping to ease the tensions, by offering improved trade relations and proposing a non-aggression pact.

At the same time, it is hoped that the impressive battleship itself will send a clear signal that even to a well-equipped military force such as that of Custadia, the Imperium of Leonism would present a formidable foe in case relations turned hostile.

In Treadwellia, His Gobbiness is perplexed at how this musclebound counterpart can lift a whole Tubbius worth of weight with just His legs!

Wait.

Tubbius does that daily on His own.

Mystery solved! There is no real achievement here!

I know nothing about this, but maybe the guy is a hardened bagel store robber. Maybe he eats Kitkats without snapping them first. Maybe he dislikes moose stew. Maybe he doesn't know how long Adelsin has been farming for. Watch out, this man could be extremely dangerous.

Or he could be completely harmless.

Only godless barbarians torture Kit-Kats like that before eating them.

R.F. Hovarth AFB, Canton of Melindor, eastern Loftegen 2

Johann Schmeidt, LGA1, Leonism Luftwaffe, was tired, and looking forward to the weekend, when he and LGA2 Ludwig Meyer would get some down time after a very busy week. They had flown every day, putting the Viper BT.3 through its paces, including an exhilaratingly scary flight using the 'terrain follow' mode of the Viper's autopilot. They'd skimmed the waters of a nearby reservoir at nearly the speed of sound, first at 90 meters, then at a mind-blowing fifteen, before the plane pitched up to clear the next dam on the river. They'd also made a couple of simulated bomb runs against actual bridges and rail yards, and dropped an inert training bomb on the nearby range. An inert training atomic bomb.

Johann shuddered just a little. When they weren't flying they'd been doing strike planning with the rest of the pilots and WSO's of the 366th Bomb Squadron. In the main it was just like they did things back in the Imperium: pick a route to the target that let you avoid as many defenses as possible, and decide what you were going to do about the ones you couldn't avoid. It was just that pretty much every Loftie solution to such problems involved something with a nuclear warhead. It had been explained to Johann that a typical strike mission would see each Viper armed with two air-to-air missiles (200 ton yield warhead) and two short range attack missiles (50 kt warhead) on under wing hard points, with a gravity bomb (or two) of whatever yield was appropriate to the mission stowed in the Viper's internal bomb bay. Other load-outs were possible, of course.

Finally Col. Soammes, the commander of the 366th Bomb Wing, had addressed the whole group. "I've just got a memo about our role in Schedule," he said. "It seems that Orange's offensive and defensive capabilities will be equal to our own."

That drew a groan from the assembled officers, who knew that their job would be all the harder.

"With one exception," Soammes went on. "We're to work on tactics for attacking a high value Orange installation protected by a regional SAM battery, a local SAM battery, and a high powered laser that can fire anything from a one megawatt pulse every second to a ten megawatt pulse every ten seconds, without overheating."

That drew an even loader groan, and a sharp rebuke from the colonel, "Knock it off! You're professionals, not kindergardeners. The stats of this laser weapon haven't been finalized yet, and neither has its location. When we have more detailed information, then you can start crying."
