True, though I don't think it was so much the presidential run as the caricature-of-a-Democrat policies he advocated by the end.

The February Coup
February 2, 2051
Executive Palace, Chicago, North American Federation

“I won’t stand for this Martin! I’m the rightful Chairman of this nation and they can’t stop me!” Germaine Schulte, Chairman of The Executive Council was practically foaming at the mouth.

Martin Northfeld, State Minister of the Federation, held up his hand in a calming gesture, “Sir, a vote of no confidence is binding. And if the Supreme Court finds the footage from Sunday to be valid, they will call a motion of no confidence. And we’ve both done the math, that’s a vote you can’t win. Your polls are down too hard, even after lifting martial law in the SORZ. So, respectfully sir, they can stop you.”

In the two days following what the media was know calling “Bloody Sunday”, 23 more protestors had been killed by the Gendarmerie. Of course that paled in comparison to the 44 killed in the Downtown Chicago after a Gendarmerie Captain was assassinated. Martin has urged Schulte to sack a handful of officers and do his best to distance himself from the bloodshed. Instead, he’d doubled down and placed the entire nation under Military Law. Media calls for a no-confidence vote were defeating on both sides of the isle. Northfeld had practically begged him to change course but it appeared that the Gendarmerie brass were dug into him like a tick.

“I honestly couldn’t give a fúck Martin. The Gendarmerie will keep the peace. I’m in charge.” Schulte practically growled at him. “Get out. I have another meeting.”

Martin got up with a sigh, storming out of the room. As he stepped into the hall way, he almost crashed into General Donny Souther, Chief of Staff of the National Gendarmerie. Southern gave him a smug smile as Martin sidestepped to avoid him.
“See you soon Marty” he condescended.

Field Marshal Locke paced. Germaine Schulte was going to be removed, that wasn’t lreally up for debate. The real question was how, and who else was coming with him.
“Sir, the ‘37 constitution has to stay in place. The Chairman has overstepped his power and will be arrested. Certain members of the Gendarmerie have placed their loyalty in him, but that certainly doesn’t warrant dismantling the whole association.” said General Deshpande. She always the mediating voice, much to the chagrin of General Rowan.

“Oh please,” he snorted, “disbanding the Gendarmerie should be the least of our steps.”

Locke’s protégée, General Kennedy piped up, “The ‘37 Constitution has kept the Federation stagnate for over a decade. The Unification Wars may have ended but that doesn’t mean war has. If we don’t assert ourselves internationally it won’t be long before Philadelphia or Nashville start to get big ideas! And that means our own government!”

“Oh please,” Desphande retorted,” we have asserted ourselves. Your own regiments are still fighting in Virginia!”

“Don’t pretend like the Virginia Expedition is accomplishing anything real. Whether or not Richmond knows it, they’re hardly more then a spasming corpse. The expedition is merely slapping it in hopes we resuscitate it.”

Desphande looked to Locke and Admiral Newman sympathetically. “Marshal, you must see this is treason! We exist to serve North America, not to obliterate it’s only stable government!”

Newman scoffed, “the Gendarmerie is gunning down citizens in the street, and you want to call it a stable government? The Gendarmerie was corrupt from the get-go and we all know that.”

“Exactly!” nodded Kennedy confidently.

“I never said I agreed with you Steve.” The Admiral said, wagging a finger at him. “The Gendarmerie needs to be replaced. The politicians can call it “privatization” or whatever they want, but the Grand Army needs to assume policing roles for the nation.”

“The Grand Army needs to assume every role for the nation!” Rowan shouted.

Deshpande resounded sharply, “You blithering authoritarian fool! What do you really think that’s going to accomplish? To destr-

“Enough!” Locke barked. The room quieted as all eyes turned to him. “The downfall of America was the concentration of military power in the civilian government. Therefore we limited the power of the Federation. And yet it has become abundantly clear even the limited military power granted to the civilian government has been corrupted. It’s own generals are now beholden to the coin of civilian corruption. It is a natural drawn conclusion that the power of arms cannot be concentrated in civilians. The military must not be controlled by the state and the state cannot he controlled by the state. The only option we have is a merger. The military must become the state...” Locke raised his hands as he said it, bringing them together to illustrate his point. He stared at nothing, seemingly silenced by the weight of his own realization.

The night of February 5, 2051

Christine was scared. Her apartment was near the top of the building, but she could still hear the gunshots like they were right outside her door. Something must have been happening at the Gendarmerie Precinct. She lived down the street from it, and the weapons fire had been pouring from that direction. Her stint as an enlistee in the Unification Wars told her it was largely small arms fire and almost entirely automatic. Between the cracks of nearby gunfire, she could hear the pops of more distant fire. Something big was happening. She watched the soldiers fight up and down the block for over an hour from her window. Before the fight ended. She couldn’t tell who the Gendarmerie officers had been fighting in the dark, but the foe had definitely won.

She’d had her Television tuned to the local news, until it had abruptly turned to static. She left it there, waiting for more news. She’s almost fallen asleep, cradled on her couch when the TV switched from static to the emergency klaxon of a government report. She watched a fair skinned man appeared on the screen, holding a crumpled paper. He had a Grand Army uniform on. The background of the camera angle looked like a scene from a video game, complete with a blood splattered green screen and scorch marked walls.

“Oh no,” she muttered to herself.

The man cleared his throat and read from the paper, “This is an emergency broadcast of the Grand Army of North America. This video will be looped on all domestic television channels for the next twenty-four hours. As of o-two hundred hours this morning of February sixth, the National Congress of the Federation has, by majority vote, moved to temporarily suspend the Federation Constitution under Article 4, Clause 7, for a period of 3 months. This motion suspends the authority of both the National Gendarmerie and the Executive Council. Chairman Germaine Schulte and several members of the Council have been arrested and charged for the recent and egregious abuses of power. As we speak, the leadership of the National Gendarmerie is being subdued. However, resistance from tyrannical elements of the Gendarmerie are resisting. A twenty-four hour nationwide curfew is now in effect and we urge and citizens to stay indoors until the threat can be subdued. The Grand Army was founded with the intention of restoring order to North America. We are fulfilling that duty. Further information will becoming soon.”

The video looped again. “This is an emergency broadcast of the Grand Army of North America.”

Excerpt from “The History of the Federation, 2035-2060: The Comprehensive Classroom Tool”

During the night of February 5th, a battalion of heliborne GANA Blue Berets attacked the Executive Complex, disarming building security and arresting many. The National Congress, in session at the time, were refused exit. Chairman Schulte and seven members of his Cabinet were also arrested along with several high ranking generals in the Gendarmerie. They were then taken out of the city to a GANA prison. Word quickly got out to other Gendarmerie leadership of what was occurring, and soon after Field Marshal Locke gave them an ultimatum to surrender and face possible amnesty or be defeated. Many generals chose to surrender and some even assisted GANA troops, but just as many chose to fight back.

That night, as fighting erupted in many cities, the National Congress voted in a landslide to effectively support the coup, signing a three-month suspension of the constitution and specifically giving power to the Joint Provisional Government, headed by GANA authorities. Over the next six days, the GANA ground forces fought for control of the nation. But for Gendarmerie resistance, it was an uphill battle. Outnumbered, outgunned, and out-trained, it was only a matter of time before they were defeated. On the morning of the 12th, with only minor Gendarmerie resistance persisting in the larger cities, Field Marshal Locke was helicoptered into Chicago to formally take control of the JPG. In the sort of tragic happenstance you only find in war, a Gendarmerie straggler managed to lose a rocket that ultimately downed his chopper. Locke was killed in impact.

By that afternoon, Stephen Kennedy had been selected as the next leader, and sworn in as both Field Marshal and President of the JPG.

News of the February Coup spread rapidly while it was happening via social media. Airwaves both public and private were occupied to spread GANA messages about the events. The GANA press releases were relatively forthcoming about events, speaking openly about the arrests and Gendarmerie resistance, as well as the intentions of the JPG.

”...The recent actions of the tyrannical Germaine Schulte have proven that the 2037 Constitution does not provide a sufficient government for the people of the Federation. Being charged with the peacekeeping and unity of North America, the Grand Army sees fit to reform the government so as to provide a more stable state for the citizenry...”

Yeah. I still might write a post or two organizing my stratocracy, but that’s mostly for my own world building entertainment.

I'm sure you've guessed the answer to that by now.

The greater texan state wrote:I'm sure you've guessed the answer to that by now.

I have a sixty five pages long answer to this question.

My friends,

It’s been the most wonderful three years of my life spent with you on this lovely little platform called Nationstates. Some of my fondest memories are of writing histories, making schemes, and yes, waging war alongside and sometimes against you. I’ve taken such savage pride in building this community up from the ground together, from A World Beyond to A Neoworld Beyond to A Curtain of Steel to finally this last and most enduring region, Machtpolitik, Seasons 1-4. It will occupy a special place in my heart forever.

But more special to me are the friendships established. You are all such lovely people and without the medium of Nationstates I would never have been able to meet all of you—Brazil, the Netherlands, even across the far-flung reaches of the United States. Yes, in the heat of battle sometimes I may have considered you a foe; but please know that I shall never not think of you as friends.

I fear that I may not have the chance to say this again to all of you—the best-laid plans of mice and men oft go awry, and our careful plots unfortunately are no different—so let me say it now. You are some of the best people I know: the cleverest, bravest, and kindest souls I have had the fortune to meet, and I am so honored to have been among your number.

As somewhat of a (hopefully-not) parting gift to all of you, I would like to take the opportunity to present another of my precious countryball group portraits. I’ve been sitting on top of this for a while—if I am to be entirely honest, I had probably finished the greater part of the picture late last summer, and have been just fretting over minor details for the last few months. But I think it is fitting and appropriate that I present it to you before the close of our journey together.

By no means do I believe this is an end. To quote Churchill—It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning. Farewell, and until our paths next cross. I hope it is soon.

You men are some of the smartest I’ve ever had the privilege to know. I struggle to find the words to express my feelings. Through any up and down, Nationstates has provided me a safe place in which I could express myself and find common ground. The memories I’ve made scheming and fighting and reading and learning and exploring will be something I cherish for the rest of my days.

In a way that you sort of only find on the internet, Ive counted you all as close friends despite never so much as seeing your faces. I love and appreciate you all. My door is always open for a roleplay, a discussion or even just a hello.

I’m blessed to have known you all and wish you all Godspeed in future endeavors. As I always said to Vulpinas on the eve of wars: Once more unto the breach dear friends.
