Personally I allowed capitalism for a little while and then banned it again once my economy hit Frightening. Once you get to Frightening it’s hard to tumble back down since issues start to affect it less. You can certainly develop your economy without doing that though, it just takes longer.

When I play a nation that has more leftist policies, I usually allow a bunch of plus economic decisions when dealing with my issues tabs, and then focus on curtailing the private enterprise from there after reaching a certain point. For this nation here, what I aim to do is to allow small capitalistic ventures and internal free trade, with the reduction of state-owned enterprises except for the major ones such as energy and telecommunications and the such, the rest to be run by family or town owned co-ops. Or at least, that’s how I’ll RP my policies as anyhow.

I did a couple issues where I was given the option to invade capitalist nations for resources and they raised my economy by a lot, and with supporting industries strongly under autarky. Never was capitalist or market socialist.

Jokes aside, I did that in my main nation, and in this one I'm just taking it slow, it works just as well, except it takes a bit longer. For leftist nations economy just grows a bit slower.
EDIT: I typed that out and my economy instantly rose from really bad to good in 3 issues
