Mustafa Kemal Atatürk
First president of the Republic of Turkey

"I will lead the people by the hand along the road until their feet are sure and they know the way. Then they may choose to rule for themselves and rule themselves. Then my work will be done." - Mustafa Kemal Atatürk

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk was the first president of the Republic of Turkey and was granted dictatorial powers during his term from 1923 to 1938. He was born in Thessaloniki, Greece in 1881 on May 19. He was a very important revolutionary figure during the early 20th century and one of the key people in establishing the Republic of Turkey, he was a military general and the president eventually and helped overthrow the Ottoman empire after world war 1 and brought Turkey from practical feudalism into the the 20th century!

When he took power he implimented sweeping reforms including: the seperation of religion and state, free and compulsory education and opening thousands of new schools, introducing a new Latin alphabet for the Turkish written language, industrialization, full universal sufferage in 1934, completely making it 100% illegal to descriminate against women and making the 100% equal to men, and many many others.

Over interesting and silly facts:
People mourned and balled their eyes out when he died, he was truly missed...
Kemal Atatürk was given honor by the UN for Turkey as one of the first nations to fight imperialism!
The Fezz was banned as Atatürk saw it as a relic of an old era from the Ottomans and as bad for modern Turkey! Western hat companies poured in after that!

The nation still functions a lot under Kemalism today!
