Day 1 of Greater United Bangla's Presidential Election: Moderate Turnout Amidst Incidents and Rain

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________

The first day of the 9th Presidential Election in Greater United Bangla saw a moderate voter turnout of approximately 57%, with notable incidents reported in some areas.

Unfortunately, separate clashes occurred in Guwahati, Tripura, and Manipur, resulting in the detention of 42 individuals. Polls were suspended at one center due to these incidents. Ashok Kumar Debnath, additional secretary to the Election Commission, assured the public that overall voting concluded peacefully without any major disruptions.

Speaking on the incidents, Debnath highlighted that polls were suspended at one center, and law enforcement authorities swiftly detained individuals involved in 19 scattered irregularities. He emphasized that immediate action was taken to address any unrest.

In addition to these challenges, heavy rains since midnight in Shillong led to a lower voter turnout in the morning. However, as weather conditions improved throughout the day, election officials saw an gradual increase in voter participation. District election officer and returning officer Shahidulla Shagar emphasized the implementation of robust security measures to safeguard the integrity of the election and maintain a conducive environment for voters.

Laldala Chawnghmingliana, the BGB officer of Mizoram, affirmed a zero-tolerance policy towards any unfortunate incidents that could compromise the integrity of the electoral process, emphasizing a commitment to upholding the principles of a free and fair election.

Activists Jailed After Magna Carta Protest Incident

Two climate activists, Helen Carter, 82, and Margaret Johnson, 85, find themselves awaiting trial after a bold demonstration at the British Library which resulted in the damage to the protective casing of the Magna Carta. The protesters, affiliated with the environmental group Just Stop Oil, used this historic symbol to voice their concerns over what they perceive as the government's failure to adequately address the climate crisis.

The incident occurred at approximately 10:40 BST on Friday, when Carter, a retired reverend, and Johnson, a former biology teacher, approached the artifact's display. According to eyewitness accounts and video footage posted online, the pair brandished a sign declaring, "The Government is breaking the law" and proceeded to glue themselves to the glass enclosure. Reports confirmed that Johnson used a hammer and Carter a chisel in their attempt to draw attention to their cause.

Security personnel at the British Library intervened promptly, minimizing the damage to the artifact's enclosure. The library later assured the public that the Magna Carta itself remained unharmed, though the case suffered superficial damage.

The Metropolitan Police have confirmed the arrest of both women on suspicion of criminal damage. They were taken to a local station where they were detained pending further investigation.

In a statement released through Just Stop Oil, Carter expressed the urgency of their message, highlighting the historical significance of the Magna Carta as a symbol of law and rights, but emphasizing that "there will be no freedom, no lawfulness, no rights, if we allow climate breakdown to become the catastrophe that is now threatened."

The British Library, while respecting the right to peaceful protest, condemned the actions that put the priceless artifact at risk. A spokesperson stated, "While we support the right to express views in public, any action that endangers our cultural heritage crosses a significant line."

Legal experts speculate that the case could set a precedent in how protest actions targeting cultural or historical artifacts are treated under British law. The upcoming trial, expected to garner significant public and media attention, could potentially influence future demonstrations and their legal ramifications.

The incident has sparked a broader discussion on balancing the right to protest with the preservation of national heritage, as well as the effectiveness of such dramatic actions in furthering policy change.

As Carter and Johnson prepare for their day in court, the debate continues on the role of activism in the age of climate crisis and the lengths to which it should be allowed to challenge existing legal frameworks to spur governmental action.

OOC: pretend I posted this 1 hour after Bangla's post

IRAN TO SEND OFFICIALS TO OBSERVE BANGLA ELECTIONS

Several officials from the National Electoral Commission, the government organization that oversees Iranian national and provinicial elections, have just arrived in Dhaka, the sprawling, bustling capital of the nation to observe the gargantuan presidential election. With nearly 400 million registered voters or 4 times the entire population of Iran, the massive presidential election demonstrates Bangla's commitment to free and fair democratic institutions.

Additionally, as the only Middle Eastern democracy, Iranian observances of the election would provide considerable information on better and more efficient methods of running elections within Iran itself. Although not nearly as large as Bangla, Iran could be learning a fair few lessons from Bangla's conducting of such a massive election. Iran thanks Bangla for the ability of officials to observe and learn from the proceedings of electing a noble leader for this wonderful nation.

Tragic Aircraft Crash in Chattogram: Squadron Leader Martyred, Another Pilot Hospitalized

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________

A tragic incident unfolded on Friday morning as a Bangla Air Force training aircraft crashed into the Karnaphuli River in Chattogram, resulting in the loss of Squadron Leader Asim Jawad's life. The incident occurred when the aircraft, identified as a YAK 130, encountered technical glitches shortly after takeoff from the BAF's Zahurul Haque base around 10:30 am.

According to reports from Patenga police station's officer in charge Kabirul Islam, the pilots attempted to bail out using parachutes as the aircraft caught fire mid-air. The aircraft crashed into the Karnaphuli River, narrowly avoiding densely populated areas near the National Oil Marketing Company, the Eastern oil refinery, and Chattogram Shah Amanat International Airport.

Squadron Leader Asim Jawad, displaying remarkable courage and presence of mind, directed efforts to steer the aircraft towards the river, stating, "We will have to reach the river at any cost, lest we die along with thousands more."

Jawad joined the Bangla Air Force Academy (BAFA) in 2010. He was commissioned as a pilot officer in 2011.
Tragically, despite their valiant efforts, Squadron Leader Asim Jawad succumbed to his injuries around 12:30 pm while receiving treatment at Banouja Isa Khan Hospital in Patenga. Meanwhile, Wing Commander Sohan, the other pilot, sustained injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at the medical squadron of Zahurul Haque base.

Chattogram airport's director, Group Captain Taslim Ahmed, confirmed that the crash resulted from technical glitches, leading to the plane catching fire immediately after takeoff and subsequently breaking into pieces upon impact with the Karnaphuli River.

Efforts are underway by Air Force and Navy personnel to retrieve the aircraft from the river, as affirmed by Chittagong Port's secretary Omar Faruque. Notably, port activities remain unaffected despite ongoing recovery operations.

Roraima crippled by massive blackout, state of emergency declared
Caracas' decision to cut power exports to blame, says Itamaraty

Boa Vista

The state of Roraima is completely without power after authorities in Caracas halted all power exports to Brazil.

"The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela will no longer supply the Brazilian state of Roraima with its hydroelectric resources," wrote its foreign ministry. "We are morally and politically disinclined from transacting with an enemy which has proven itself to be hostile towards the Venezuelan People and constitutional order."

The root of the problem lies with Roraima's geographical isolation from the rest of Brazil, which has caused it to remain disconnected from the national power grid. Power is instead imported from the Guri Dam in Venezuela, an arrangement which costs the state $150 million reals each year in exchange for an allowance of 200 megawatts (MW). This has predictably placed Roraima's energy security at the mercy and whim of a foreign power, which, now openly hostile, bodes ill for its residents.

State authorities have declared a state of emergency in response to the blackouts, authorising the Polícia Militar to temporarily assume control over all gas stations across the state so fuel may be rationed. Classes have been cancelled, and hospitals were instructed to postpone all non-emergency surgeries to ensure patient safety. The international airport at Boa Vista was closed just this morning so the Air Force could airlift power supplies and portable generators until a more permanent solution is found.

2,000 personnel from the Força Nacional de Segurança Pública, a force of law enforcement officers formed specifically to handle major security crises, are expected to arrive at Roraima over the next two weeks to aid civil defence efforts.

The Brazilian Restoration and Salvation Council (BRSC) has denounced this act of energy blackmail and vows to retaliate.

"Any deaths and injuries which come out of this will be on their hands," said President Franco dos Santos, speaking in a press conference. "Our military authorities are meeting with our allies in the Global Security Association 2 to determine next steps as we speak."

WUZURG FRAMADAR GAANJIA VISITS FLOOD-STRIKEN DISASTER AREAS

Iran-e wrote:FREAK RAINS AND FLOODS DEVASTATE SOUTHERN IRANIAN CITIES

OOC: This was a post meant for the freak Iranian Gulf rains and floods that happened earlier this month, but NS nuked itself. Pretend this happened throughout April 14 to 15.

It was a calm, sunny day in southern Iran. The industrious, lively cities of the south were bustling with the flow of trade, noise, and all the other hustles of the big city. Then, suddenly after afternoon prayers, it began to become cloudy. The sky turned to a depressing gray, as if the people were in London. They looked up, surprised at the sight of not having the sun beat down on your neck. No matter, it's probably going to clear up, they thought. And the clouds would indeed clear up - just after they had finished emptying their cargo.

A few light shower drops fell initally. Rain? How very rare for such an arid location. The people, mildly surprised and annoyed, began to rush for the nearest shelter. Their loose, thin clothes would instantly get them wet. It would probably stop after a few minutes. And indeed, the rain would stop - but after a few hours. What once was small, fine drops turns to globules. The calm, pitter-pattering sound of rain began to carress the roof, stiking it lightly with its many wet drops. But it got louder. And louder. And louder. Were the buildings being shot at by some lunatic in the air? No, this was no lunatic. This was nature at its worst.

The heavy and pronounced drops began to damage the roofs. Water started to come into the ceiling and through the concrete. This was not just some light rain. This was something of epic proportions. The water poured in throughout the day. These sewage systems were not equipped to handle such a torrential downpour. Many began to be clogged or simply cease to take in more water. The streets got wet. It became sandal-high. Then ankle-high. Then calf-high, in some places even swimmable. Some old doors burst open, launching a mini-tsunami within homes and shops. The dirty water infested grain, making it uneatable. Schools and businesses closed as people hunkered down for a long, wet night.

As the sun began to rise up, the clouds departed almost as quickly as they had came. The damage to the streets and to homes, the sheer scale of the water, was incomprehensible. Cars were lifted and tossed onto sidewalks, sometimes upside down. Entire tables and chairs of restaurants were upended and found a mile away. Many first floors became soaked ankle-high with water. Wifi antennae were destroyed due to the heavy rain, smashed into several pieces. It was as if a random tsunami washed in and by a miracle, only saved the buildings. The damages and floods could be seen for many miles on end as cities transformed to some of the world's largest swimming pools.

The Governments of the Provinces of Khuzestan, Fars and Kirman have declarated a regionside state of emergency, with the Central Government following suit. Damages are estimated to be around Ð2-3 billion. There have been 12 reported deaths, 8 to asphyxiation from drowning and 4 from resulting mudslides, 758 injured, and 64 in critical condition, being treated in makeshift clinics and nearby hospitals. The Central Government is planning to send out a Ð500 million relief package, including medical supplies, food, water purification packets (OOC: Think like those P&G water purification powders that one goes camping with), freshwater, and other necessities. The number of displaced people numbers roughly 200,000 alongside about 60,000 damaged homes and 80,000 other damaged commercial and industrial buildings.

In addition to the relief package, an estimated Ð100 million is planning to be sent over by atashgahs throughout Iran as part of a large monumental charity effort to aid in flood victims. "Iran is in a state of crisis. The Government is acting with speed and haste to aid the victims of this terrible disaster. Now excuse me while I end this conference, I have to go," said Wuzurg Framadar Gaanjia as she bolted out of the conference room, working day and night to rectify the situation. The clip has gone viral throughout Iran, with many people, especially younger people, positively commenting about Gaanjia's literal swift actions for this tragedy.

As Iran seeks to recover from this disaster, further methods to predict potential future natural disasters, including more up-to-date weather systems and warnings, alongside better flood and disaster-mitigation techniques are underway.

Dates: April 18 - 21, 2024

OOC: Apologies for my chronically late posts

Following the freak floods that encompassed and nearly submerged several southern Iranian cities, Wuzurg Framadar Behdis Gaanjia has arrived in Istakhr to inspect and see the horrific effects of the rains and subsequent floods. What she saw was true horror. Roads were submerged so much that makeshift boats transported goods. Whole cars were uplifted and turned upside down. Windows were shattered from the sheer force of water. Sometimes, old and unstable foundations collapsed whole homes. Sheer destruction and carnage could be seen for many miles. In Hormuz, Deylam, and Bushehr, entire neighborhoods were flooded, with people having to sometimes swim through filth to reach their roof.

"I am truly shocked by the powers of Mother Nature on our land. We Iranians are resilient and adamant that no matter what obstacle fasces us, we will rebound back stronger. Iran's will has been tested numerous times throughout history, and each time she has won. I mourn for the many strong men, women, and children that have lost their lives in this terrible tragedy. Our land shall heal, but those brave souls will live on in garodman (OOC: Avestan name for Heaven/Paradise)."
