Before it was the Libertarian Flag it was another flag, one that was most certainly not legal.

Opa, those our colleague that ruled in a big country liked?

“Hrarroom!” (= “Greetings”), and a hearty "Welcome to the IDU", for Rhand.

“As a region, the International Democratic Union is ranked 19th in the world for Most World Assembly Endorsements.”
Congratulations, fellow IDUvians!
(Note that that means “‘Most” in terms of average per nation, rather than actual total overall, of course: In some of the largest regions there are individual nations with more endorsements than our combined total…)
However, I see that eight of our number have yet to endorse the elected Delegate, Lauchenoiria. Come on, folks!

Preliminary TG sent.

I understand that our Cartographer Sanctaria is unwilling to set coordinates or a scale for the regional map, and his argument that this makes it easier to add more nations without limiting their sizes to ones that are as small IC as they look OOC, and I do have some sympathy with this reasoning.
Nevertheless, it remains a fact that without any such agreed coordinates and scale there are several aspects of nations that can not be determined consistently across the map: Each nation’s player could and quite possibly would still make decisions about those aspects of their own country for themselves, of course, but without a set of underlying guidelines for them to use this could lead to jarringly incongruous differences between adjoining nations such as an area of boreal ‘taiga’ forest or even tundra sandwiched between two areas of tropical rainforest (without that middle section being raised-up on high mountains and/or a large plateau, which would make that situation slightly more plausible).
I am therefore suggesting these guidelines for use by those players who do want to design their nations’ details so that they consistently & fairly realistically fit in with the details of other nations designed on the same basis. They still increase the size of the region’s lands significantly from the original version, but do so without moving various nations for which I know significant amounts of detail had already been determined (whether by their players alone, or in consultation with me in my ‘Regional Ecologist’ role) into climates too different from those previously thought right for them.

You can find these suggestions in our forum, in a new thread, @ https://theidu.us/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=2067&p=20175#p20175 .

Gonhog and United New England

Due to unwillingness and an inability to keep the map updated, the map as developed by my nation has been archived.

The WFE has been updated to remove references to the now depreciated map, and officers have been updated to remove myself as Cartographer.

Who will upload the map now? Or... Will we even have an map?

Thank you for all the work you put into the map, Sanct. I greatly appreciate it and it was a nice, unique way to show the IDU community on a wholly collective scale.

Anglia-saxia wrote:Who will upload the map now? Or... Will we even have an map?

I'm quite versed in cartography, and I would be more than willing to take on the cartographer role alongside my present co-cultural minister role. Obviously, I think this should be up for debate with Administration and perhaps the IDUSA, but we'll see. I thoroughly enjoyed and drew a lot of inspiration from Sanctaria's map, so I'm sure any new project will share some resemblance.

In regards to the map...

I would first thank Sanctaria for his dedication to the map while serving as regional cartographer. I found the map to be an invaluable resource for both light world building and full on RP sessions. Numerous people have expressed how deeply they enjoyed the map and I think that, all in all, our region was made a better place as a result of its existence. Thank you Sanctaria.

With the fate of the map now hanging in the balance, I feel that my two cents on the matter should be expressed.

In truth, there are a lot of things that need to be dealt with in the near future.

We must first decide if we even want to continue having a map. They are a lot of pain to create and facilitate. I would personally be in favor of continuing to have a regional map for aforementioned reasons. Additionally, people have literally said that what drew them to the region was our map. That’s pretty neat.

If we are choosing to continue having a map as part of our shared regional canon, we should figure out who should continue to facilitate it and if we should remake the map or continue off of what we have. I like the map we have but think that it could use some changes. The new cartographer should work with the regional ecologist to work out exactly what new things should be included.

I would also encourage greater player choice in nation size. There is a very good reason why brand new nations shouldn’t be allowed to be the size of Russia. However, there are some nations that might be canonically better suited in a larger nation size and I don’t think length of stay in the region should be the only factor. Some veteran nations might want to be Luxembourg. Some newer nations might want to be the size of Spain. We should try to reach a compromise that benefits everyone in situations such as these.

The job of Cartographer is not only technically complex but demands extraordinary dedication and patience in dealing with various competing demands. Keeping the map is a very important responsibility to the character and quality of the region. I'd like to express my fondest gratitude to Sanctaria; thank you for your service and for a job well done.

I have just started a forum thread about the wildlife of United New England... or, at least, of their territory on the regional map which is not the whole nation.
It's @ https://theidu.us/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=2071&p=20212#p20212 .

Some of these details have actually been agreed, but some are currently just suggestions.
I've reserved enough posts for extending these lists, so feel free to comment there.
All of the basic types of animals listed, although maybe not the exact species or subspecies involved, are among those that I think could reasonably be found in other nations on that continent as well -- if they have suitable habitat and food sources there -- if we're using the basic presumptions in my previous thread.

Hopefully I'll get some more details added tomorrow.

Totally agree with all the sentiments. Sanctaria did excellent in the demanding and important role of Cartographer. It may be time to consider revamping the map completely, as some nations featured are no longer active. Also to consider is the format of the map. I have been doing some research on fantasy map generators and haven't found a good solution. It would be nice to have a map that could be collaboratively edited (with restrictions of course).

Bears Armed wrote:Hopefully I'll get some more details added tomorrow.

Antelopes added.
Some punctuation altered, to standardize its use across the sections already posted.
Question about "Blonde Panther" answered.
Local name for Chalicothere noted, and added to its entry.

I would support the creation of a new map keeping some features of the previous map. I am willing to collaborate on the map project with other IDU members, as I find the role of Cartographer to be one that requires A great deal of work to for a single person manage/maintain. I would suggest a list of map requirements be developed before attempting to use a map generator. I think codifying a few map policies would be in order as well, such as what to do about Nations that CTE, how to incorporate IDU canon and history, and striking a balance between leaving room for future growth and accommodating nations that prefer bordering with their neighbors. I would support the use of polls or voting to help ensure opportunities for nations to collaborate on specific features they’d like to see.

When I’ve researched programs suitable for fictional map creation, I’ve found Gimp to be a potentially useful tool, however, as I have almost no graphic design skills, I find it to be clunky and not user-friendly.

Finally, once a map is populated, I am keen to develop some type of governing body, call it a “Cartography Commission,” for carrying out maintenance and upgrades for the future. I would hope this would be a duty members would perform as service to the Region.

More changes to the thread about United New England's ecosystems:

“Blonde Puma” problem now really fixed.

Red Dog: details of their preferred prey added.
Deer: names and brief descriptions for the five native species have been added.
Rodents: the notes about Porcupines have been expanded, with two more species added, and some brief notes about Squirrels (including a ‘Giant Squirrel’) have been added.
I have now posted some suggestions about possibilities in the Mammals: Marsupials and “primitive” types section.
Osprey added (but without the IDU-endemic species' full scientific name, until I can find this in my old notes) among the ‘Non-Passeriform Birds’.

"Hrarroom!" ("Greetings!"), and "Welcome Back!", to Ambassador deandra.

I've added a little bit stuff to the thread in our forum about United New England's ecosystems.

U.N.E., are you okay with me adding a couple more species of Canids to fill the "jackal" role there?

This nation's climb up the rankings for 'Most Cultured' continues: It's now at # 16 in all of NationStates, which means that it isn't just in the top 01% of nations for that rating it's actually -- bearing in mind the current number of nations in existence -- in the top 01% of that top 01% !

Back down to #17, now: I didn't drop any points, and the nations that were just behind urrs before this haven't surged past, so presumably somebody revived a CTE'd nation which already had a higher score. Still, I'm only a handful of points behind the next nation up the table...
