24th July 1959 (63 years ago): U.S. Vice President Richard Nixon and Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev have a "Kitchen Debate"
The Kitchen Debate (Russian: Кухонные дебаты, romanized: Kukhonnye debaty) was a series of impromptu exchanges through interpreters between U.S. Vice President Richard Nixon, then 46, and Chairman of the Council of Ministers Nikita Khrushchev, 65, at the opening of the American National Exhibition at Sokolniki Park in Moscow on 24 July 1959.
An entire house was built for the exhibition which the American exhibitors claimed that anyone in the United States could afford. It was filled with labor-saving and recreational devices meant to represent the fruits of the capitalist American consumer market. The debate was recorded on color videotape, and Nixon made reference to this fact; it was subsequently broadcast in both countries.
In 1959, the Soviets and Americans agreed to hold exhibits in each other's countries as a cultural exchange to promote understanding. This was a result of the 1958 U.S.–Soviet Cultural Agreement. The Soviet exhibit in New York City opened in June 1959, and Vice President Nixon was on hand the following month to open the US exhibit in Moscow. Nixon took Soviet First Secretary Nikita Khrushchev on a tour of the exhibit. There were multiple displays and consumer goods provided by more than 450 American companies.
William Safire was the exhibitor's press agent, and he recounted that the Kitchen Debate took place in a number of locations at the exhibition, but primarily in the kitchen of a suburban model house that was cut in half for easy viewing. This was only one of a series of four meetings that occurred between Nixon and Khrushchev during the 1959 exhibition.
Khrushchev surprised Nixon during the first meeting in the Kremlin when he protested the Captive Nations Resolution passed by the US Congress, which condemned the Soviet Union for its "control" over the "captive" peoples of Eastern Europe and called upon Americans to pray for those people. After protesting the actions of the US Congress, he dismissed the new technology of the US and declared that the Soviets would have all of the same things in a few years and then say "Bye bye" as they surpassed the U.S.
Khrushchev criticised the large range of American gadgets. In particular, Khrushchev saw that some of the gadgets were harder to use than the traditional way. One of these devices was a handheld lemon juicer for tea. He criticized the device, saying that it was much easier to squeeze the juice out by hand and the appliance was unnecessary. Khrushchev asked Nixon if this device was standard in American kitchens. Nixon admitted some of the products had not hit the US market, and were prototypes. Khrushchev satirically asked "Don't you have a machine that puts food into the mouth and pushes it down?", a reference to Charlie Chaplin's 1936 film Modern Times. Nixon responded that at least the competition was technological rather than military. Both men agreed that the United States and the Soviet Union should seek areas of agreement.
The second visit occurred in a television studio inside the American exhibit. In the end, Khrushchev stated that everything that he had said in their debate should be translated into English and broadcast in the US. Nixon responded, "Certainly it will, and everything I say is to be translated into Russian and broadcast across the Soviet Union. That's a fair bargain." Khrushchev vigorously shook hands to this proposal.
Nixon argued that the Americans built to take advantage of new techniques, while Khrushchev advocated for Communism by arguing that the Soviets built for future generations. Khrushchev stated, "This is what America is capable of, and how long has she existed? 300 years? 150 years of independence and this is her level. We haven't quite reached 42 years, and in another 7 years, we'll be at the level of America, and after that we'll go farther."
The third visit occurred inside the kitchen on a cutaway model home that was furnished with a dishwasher, refrigerator, and range. It was designed to represent a $14,000 home that a typical American worker could afford.
The three major American television networks broadcast the Kitchen Debate on July 25, 1959. The Soviets subsequently protested, as Nixon and Khrushchev had agreed that the debate should be broadcast simultaneously in America and the Soviet Union, with the Soviets threatening to withhold the tape until they were ready to broadcast. The American networks, however, had felt that the delay would cause the news to lose its immediacy. The debate was broadcast on Moscow television on 27 July albeit late at night and with Nixon's remarks only partially translated.
American reaction was mixed. The New York Times called it "an exchange that emphasized the gulf between east and west but had little bearing on the substantive issue" and portrayed it as a political stunt. The paper also declared that public opinion seemed divided after the debates. Time magazine, on the other hand, praised Nixon, saying that he "managed in a unique way to personify a national character proud of peaceful accomplishment, sure of its way of life, confident of its power under threat."
Nixon gained popularity because of the informal nature of the exchange, improving upon the lukewarm reception that he previously had with the American public. According to William Safire, he also impressed Khrushchev: "The shrewd Khrushchev came away from his personal duel of words with Nixon persuaded that the advocate of capitalism was not just tough-minded but strong-willed."
The trip raised Nixon's profile as a public statesman, greatly improving his chances of receiving the Republican presidential nomination the following year. Khrushchev in a 1961 meeting with Nixon's opponent in the ensuing election, John F. Kennedy, would joke that he had voted for Kennedy.
In the Kitchen Debate, Khrushchev claimed that Nixon's grandchildren would live under communism and Nixon claimed that Khrushchev's grandchildren would live in freedom. In a 1992 interview, Nixon commented that at the time of the debate, he was sure Khrushchev's claim was wrong, but Nixon was not sure that his own assertion was correct. Nixon said that events had proven that he was indeed right because Khrushchev's grandchildren (Khrushchev's son Sergei Khrushchev was a naturalized American citizen) now lived in freedom, referring to then recent collapse of the Soviet Union.

I snapped fast awake - I had fallen asleep at my watchpost. In the blink of an eye, my head rapidly turned over to the door that served as an entrance to my little room I had been calling an office for the last few weeks. Needless to say, it was definetly NOT an actual office, but it had it's charm, alright? It was all I needed: a desk, a few magazines for my rifle, a (my) diary with a pen to go along with it and some of the usual bureocratic nonsense someone of my rank, a corporal, had to keep in check every once in a while.
A "Come in. " nervously escaped out of me.
The door shyly opened and a figure far from being shy stepped in.
"Y' was s'possed tah be at the bloody Levit port city by now, daemnit! T'haedes 'cha doin' 'ere?" the figure roared.
"I was just, uhm, reorganizing some of the visitor spreadsheets, and, er, lost... track of time. "
"Awe, feh tah Demahurge's saeke... not again, Lucius. Yer lucky, a convoy headin' dere is leavin' in some minutes. Count it as a favour, eh? Just promise 'is won't evah happen again. "
"Yes, sir. "
I think it's obvious that a conscript clearly wouldn't like patrolling the streets of a city they once lived in as a civilian. It gets far more nostalgic than one would want. It was even amplified by the fact the sea, something I longed for, was there. The waves, crashing onto the shore, mocking me. They were mocking me. Atleast my freedom was months away. That one thought ruminated within my mind. And now, it will stir me up even further.
Eh, I can deal with the blues. It could be worse, I could've been assigned to a pirateer crew or... some raider company. Despite all the complaining, being in the Praetorian guard isn't as bad as some may say. I guess it's just the fact that we're supposedly living in a free territory, yet have to... y'know, forcibly serve in a military-defense-group-watchacallit is what bugs me and many others. I could be awkwardly flirting with some girls right now instead of following some loser's orders, heh. To be fair, maybe, just maybe, I could try to pick one up at Levit. Maybe they're into uniformed boys?
As the trucks grinded to a hault and boots began marching, I jumped out of the copilot's seat and looked off. That view. So enchanting - I had missed it. The horizon was clearly visible, an azure sky and sea, only interrupted by clouds and ships respectively every once in a while, stood to be seen. I was enamored with it. So calming, it reminded me that I was no more than a spec in this world. To make me feel secure in the meaningless, that I was able to shape whatever I wanted out of this blue mass and claim it as my own. And then, panning to the side, I saw Levit, capital of the Free Territory of Risveglio. City of degenerates. Of bandits. Of idealists. Of the spiritual. Of soldiers. And, as it claims to be - of freedom.
Patrolling through the lows and downs of the most inner parts of the urban landscape made you wish for a nuclear winter. Despite it being very early in the morning, some conglomerations of people formed - they all were pushing and elbowing and struggling against eachother. I was skeptic that some where even taking the opportunity to pickpocket whoever they could. I had been expecting large formations to be up, even this early in the morning. Yet again, it'd seem that the desire to get your rations in this struggling economy was stronger than any of my hypothesis. Didn't matter what they were here for, though. I had to make my way past.
The dense crowd was everything around me, I couldn't make out in which direction I was going. The only thing I knew is that I clearly wasn't going to get to the city garrison any time soon.
Stumbling, I leant down to take a few breaths. Agoraphobia, that's how I think they call it. Whatever it is, it was over. For the Demiurge's sake, I cannot manage to comprehend how one can manage to commute through those cramped streets with those... those... er, whatever. I should forget about it. Why haven't I forgotten about it? I have to forget about it.
Like a bumbling duck I made my way to the Temple of the Occult. The local Praetorian garrison was established behind it. I will be real with you... I'm not a religious person, not at all, actually - even though the portfolio for a Praetorian explicitly demands for one that is devout. One that follows. What the Haedes can I say? It's not my thing. Maybe some people have their fun making do with metaphysical orchestrations, however, that's not my thing. Praxis is. Whatever, I'll put up the act. Now, and for a little more longer. It's just a few more months.
"Ah, brother Lucius!" a priest called out to me. He recognised me, though I couldn't say the same for him. Right after shuffling my feet, I faced his way. His scrawny, frail figure with a grin upon his rugged face stood amidst the two enormous wooden doors that lead to the towering structure before me. It was daunting.
"Father. " I saluted to him.
"Brother Gaius and brother Magnus along with some of my apprentices are inside. You will want to enter to leave your belongings there, won't you?"
"Guessed right, Father. As much as I love soldiering, carrying all of my equipment around places some heavy demand on my back. " A confident chuckle escaped out of me, my head tilting backwards.
"Ho, you're young. You're still in your teenage years - take care of your back, as long as it lasts."

Hello everyone, I have officially candidates myself as Minister of Culture once again! here my campaign below where I outlined my plans for the term should I get elected as Minister of Culture this time too,
Orvos for Middle 2022 Minister of Culture!
Hello everyone! by now you all should know but i'm Orvos, Doctors Orvos, I have held various positions in FNR and seeing the constant of Minister of Culture's that do badly and then get impeached I decided it's time to return to the position and bring back professionality and activity to it and i'm also bringing new blood to the position of Deputy Minister if I win the election, my running mate (who if we win will become the Deputy Minister of Culture) is The mikalan empire, now, let us outline our plans for this term should we get elected.
What do I mean? it has been a couple of times that we got inactive Ministers of Culture that then got successfully impeached from how incompetent they were, but no more of that nonsense under me! with me and Mikal at the lead we will ensure as much activity as possible in the Ministry, we will ensure every duty of the Ministry is carried out
I assure you all, I won't get impeached successfully unlike the last few Ministers of Culture, as I will do my best to actually carry out my duties which wouldn't give any justification for a impeachment, stability to the Ministry at last!
Me and my deputy The mikalan empire will try organizing many gaming sessions trought the term, which will be announced beforehand with the time so people will be prepared for them, with a variety of games, in fact we will have a Google Form in which everyone in FNR may propose games for the gaming sessions.
I promise that, unless restricted by emergencies in real life, we will carry out the Question of the Day truly daily to the best of our ability!
If we win, we promise to do at least 1 contest monthly, possibly even more frequently, with a special role for the winner trought the next month.
Last term debates were quite frankly mismanaged and utterly unprofessional for the most part, we promise we won't constantly ask the community ideas for the debates like we don't know what we are doing like a certain previous Minister but instead we will think carefully various interesting ideas for the debates, put them to vote with a regional NationStates vote for decide which one will be used in the debate and then organize the debate troughtfully and trying to ensure that the debate actually happens.
And last but not least perphaps my most ambitious project that I plan to realize should I be elected again as Minister of Culture again is...
We will try reviving the writting room, this time with a great plan, our plan is a long event in collaboration between The Ministry of Culture and the RP to create what I like the name as "A RP Sidestory", basically it would be a story happening in the Resetted RP, canon to said RP, which change setting to a different RP nation each chapter, probably with the premise that the protagonist is some kind of traveller, each month there would be a community poll for decide which nation would the next chapter take place in, each chapter to be written over the course of a month but would also be divided in smaller sections which would be released weekly and at the end of each section there would be a poll with some choices of what direction should the story take place next, most likely the writer of each chapter would be the owner of the nation in which the chapter take place with oversee from the Minister of and Deputy Minister of Culture but they would also have the option to instead leave the writting of the chapter to the Minister or Deputy Minister of Culture, plus there would be a prologue wrote by the Minister and Deputy Minister of Culture themselfes as to set up the story,
