"Big event"?

Sensorland wrote:Bit of a random thought, but this site probably isn't profitable for Max Barry, right? I imagine that even with ads and site supporters, it probably costs more than it brings in (except potentially indirectly through book sales). Either way, it's very nice of him and of the admins to keep it going.

Yeah, it isn't directly profitable, but it does provide marketing for his books, as it was the original purpose of NationStates. NS popularity as a game was a surprise though from what Max has said. Ads and the site store have allowed for badly needed upgrades to hardware, and should have it self-sustaining as Max wasn't looking for a profit here.

Yy4u wrote:"Big event"?

Hmmm...April 1st will be here in a few weeks if we're talking about an NS-wide event.

And speaking of Retro, anyone remember Max's Providence game/teaser from last year?

NS itself is certainly Retro. Text-based games of the 70's and 80's were common. There was just no Internet to make a global multi-player game. Instead, your mates all sat or stood around and behind you and watched while you played. They called out suggestions, "Go West!" "No, go North!" "Check out that # sign!", and waited their turn to show you how they could do better than you. Or not. "But I was sure that would work!" Although the original Need For Speed ran fine on my 8088 PC. Everyone hated that it didn't have a crash scene when you ran off the side of the cliff in all it's three color CGA graphics glory.

I used Gopher to hop from University to University on the Internet, before the Web. Connecting instantly with a University on the other side of the world was a very big deal in a time when it would take months to get research loaned and shipped to you from that same University. You couldn't 'Google it'. Doing your own research meant going to the Library and browsing the card catalogs and hoping you were looking in the right place. Or writing letters to request information from universities, organizations and government entities. We've got it so easy now. *chuckles* That's the kind of Retro I can do without.

Punching the cards for your computer job, dropping them, trying to put them back in order, feeding them into a compiler, bad job card...

To say nothing of taking examinations with a slide rule, because it was faster than punching numbers into a calculator, with proper answers using significant digits.

Hello! Welcome to the West Pacific, I had to suppress your post because it seemed like a roleplaying message. I would advise reading our New Player Guide and RMB etiquette.

You're still banned from here, and already breaking our etiquette (by quoting a suppressed message) during the short time you came back doesn't help. I guess I have to re-ban you due to how the ban list works.

It's random, so that may happen sometimes. But soon it could choose one of your strongest ones too! Keep answering issues and soon you could have lots of top 10%, 5% or even 1% badges for a few stats depending on your choices.

Good night TWP!

That joker is on my ban-on-sight list. Every time I see that their ban has expired I make sure I hit it again.

TODAY IN THE WEST

It's Punday Monday! You can pun-tificate about lots of things, but if you need a theme, make it musically retro (it's retro week, and today is music therapy day). As a guitarist, I'm amped up about Punday Monday!

Today is also Zero Discrimination Day. In TWP we stand against discrimination and cultivate a virtual space that welcomes people across difference... except if they're marsupialists. But really: remember that our etiquette and code of conduct is to protect a space for players to be free of discrimination.

Is this Flag bad?

Chickapigea wrote:Is this Flag bad?

I feel like it has too much going on at once, and the 4 smaller flags within the actual flag have different ratios so it looks weird. If I were you I'd choose one of these smaller flags and add some (but not all) elements of the others if you want.

What? Please don't spam the message board with nonsensical messages, I would suggest reading our RMB etiquette.

They’re from TSP - reading is an optional skill set.

Anyway Fuentana you missed a very important day for TitW. March 1st is Saint David’s Day, the national day of Wales. As your long time resident Welshman I’m a little put out at the lack of research, especially as Wales is the land of song.

Why are pirates like trumpets? They’re both murder on the high Cs!

Murder at Costco!

Tired of constantly being broke and stuck in an unhappy marriage, a young husband decided to solve both problems by taking out a large insurance policy on his wife with himself as the beneficiary and then arranging to have her killed.

A 'friend of a friend' put him in touch with a nefarious dark-side underworld figure who went by the name of 'Artie.' Artie explained to the husband that his going price for snuffing out a spouse was $10,000.

The Husband said he was willing to pay that amount but that he wouldn't have any cash on hand until he could collect his wife's insurance money. Artie insisted on being paid at least something up front, so the man opened his wallet, displaying the single dollar bill that rested inside.

Artie sighed, rolled his eyes and reluctantly agreed to accept the dollar as down payment for the dirty deed.

A few days later, Artie followed the man's wife to the local Costco Supermarket. There, he surprised her in the produce department and proceeded to strangle her with his gloved hands. As the poor unsuspecting woman drew her last breath and slumped to the floor, the manager of the produce department stumbled unexpectedly onto the murder scene. Unwilling to leave any living witnesses behind, ol' Artie had no choice but to strangle the produce manager as well.

However, unknown to Artie, the entire proceedings were captured by the hidden security cameras and observed by the shop's security guard, who immediately called the police. Artie was caught and arrested before he could even leave the premises.

Under intense questioning at the police station, Artie revealed the whole sordid plan, including his unusual financial arrangements with the hapless husband who was also quickly arrested.

The next day in the newspaper, the headline declared...

"ARTIE CHOKES 2 for $1 @ Costco"

Everyone should keep posting puns today, but I regret to inform you that it'll be an exhibition because this did it for me.

Old Days
Song by Chicago

https://youtu.be/io6ihCbskio

Old days, good times I remember
Fun days filled with simple pleasures
Drive-in movies, comic books and blue jeans
Howdy doody, baseball cards and birthdays
Take me back to a world gone away
Memories seem like yesterday

Oh, old days, good times I remember
Gold days, days I'll always treasure
Funny faces full of love and laughter
Funny places, summer nights and streetcars
Take me back to a world gone away
Boyhood memories seem like yesterday

(Old days)
In my mind and in my heart to stay
(Old days)
Darkened dreams of good times gone away

(Old days)
Days of love and feeling fancy free
(Old days)
Days of magic still so close to me

(Old days)
In my mind and in my heart to stay
(Old days)
Darkened dreams of good times gone away

(Old days)
Days of love and feeling fancy free
(Old days)
Days of magic still so close to me

And then a song for a very retro hobby:

"I'm A Girl Watcher"
Song by The O'Kaysons

https://youtu.be/raJWuz7qQVc

I'm a girl watcher
I'm a girl watcher
Watchin' girls go by
My, my, my

I'm a girl watcher
I'm a girl watcher
Here comes one now
Mmmm, mmm, mmm

I was just a boy
When I threw away my toys
I found a new pastime
To dwell on

Whenever I detects
Members of the other sex
I play the game I do so well, oh

I'm a girl watcher
I'm a girl watcher
Watchin' girls go by
My, my, my

I'm a girl watcher
I'm a girl watcher
Here comes one now

Hello there, female
My, my, but you do look swell
Could you please walk
A little slower

I wonder if you know
That you're putting on a show
Could you please walk
A little closer

I'm a girl watcher
I'm a girl watcher
Watchin' girls go by
My, my, my

I'm a girl watcher
I'm a girl watcher
Here comes one now
Mmm, mmm, mmm
