The Republic of Leser is a colossal, efficient nation, remarkable for its museums and concert halls, keen interest in outer space, and infamous sell-swords. The hard-nosed, hard-working, democratic, cheerful population of 9.94 billion Leserians are effectively ruled by a group of massive corporations, who run for political office and provide their well-off citizens with world-class goods and services. Their poorer citizens, however, are mostly starving to death while being urged to go out and get real jobs. The populace has reasonably extensive civil rights, although these are mostly aimed at allowing them to buy whatever they like.

The relatively small, corrupt government juggles the competing demands of Industry, Education, and Administration. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 39.1%.

The frighteningly efficient Leserian economy, worth a remarkable 3,744 trillion cashes a year, is broadly diversified and led by the Tourism industry, with significant contributions from Retail, Book Publishing, and Information Technology. Black market activity is extensive. Average income is an amazing 376,675 cashes, with the richest citizens earning 8.6 times as much as the poorest.

The government's policy is 'all pain, no grain', bus ads propagandize causes ranging from sexual revolution to religious pogroms, there's no representation without taxation, and athletic teenagers are among the wealthiest members of society. Crime is totally unknown. Leser's national animal is the byk, which is also the nation's favorite main course.

Leser is ranked 2,001st in the world and 59th in Osiris for Most Developed, scoring 97.74 on the Human Development Index.
