The people of Leonism speak modern German. Due to Leonism's history, Latin loan words are very common and widely known even among lesser educated people (who are generally rare in Leonism). A wide variety of dialects exist, which are sometimes barely mutually intelligible. These are mostly a play on existing RL dialects: the people of South Frisia speak like real-life East Frisians, the people from the northern mountain provinces speak like real Bavarians, the capital population speaks with a Ruhr-like dialect and so on.

Foreign languages are currently experiencing a revival after a long period of neglect, the most commonly taught are Hycronesian and English.

Treadwellia, Your imaginary friend, and Mzeusia

In celebration of me being officially added to the LazMap, I'm making the next post.

On the western-most reaches of Thule, the Kingdom of Mzeusia went to work under the early morning sun. In the groves, men and women picked fruits from the trees, and in the fields, the crops were growing steadily, promising a plentiful harvest when the time came. In the sky, birds sang overhead, and a group of men wrestled on a flat piece of land on the outskirts of a small village.

All over Mzeusia, men and women were waking up to the sun and getting on with their days. Over the southern most stretch of coast, a large rainbow could be seen reaching through the clouds in a mighty arch. Morning prayers commenced throughout the kingdom, and the forests of the dead that bordered all settlements, teemed with life.

Some Mzeusians were already looking out to sea. A man was standing by the coast with a stall, selling a selection of cakes and sweetbreads, while another man was showing off statuettes of various gods. A child ran up to the man with the cakes, and coins exchanged hands. The child ran back to her grandfather with a grin, and the grandfather nodded and smiled at the cake-seller in way of a greeting. A little ways along, a cluster of fishermen arrived at the shoreline. They chatted merrily as they set up their equipment, boasting about their latest catches and how good their rods were.

From his temple the King looked down at the capital city of Mzikos with pride. The country was doing well, and the warship he had sent out to find new lands would be coming back any day now. He decided that a walk around the herbal gardens would put his almost perpetual anxiety to rest. Stepping out from between two columns, he descended the two steps from the temple. The sky was a brilliantly clear blue, with a scattering of clouds here and there. The King turned, sandals slapping the stone pathway. Soon, he could smell the mixture of heady scents which the herb garden emitted. This brought a smile to his face, and when he reached the small garden, he sat for a moment on a bench.

Somewhere a few miles off the Mzeusian coast:
The Mzeusian rowers had guided the ship outward until they had caught a more favourable wind. The warship mission to find an island and inhabit it was an important one if Akses, God of the sea was to be appeased, and as the ship travelled further across the waves, the men on board took of a cry of "Land!" The faint outline of land had been spotted on the horizon, and the men made their way towards it.

Snoodum, if you read the RP post, you'll see that a warship (not with hostile intentions) has set sail from Mzeusia and has just spotted what they think is land. On the map, your nation is the most likely candidate for that landmass. Would you be up for an RP? It's fine if you're not.

Imaginary was originally founded by an international group of spies, and most of Your Imaginary Friends are residually multilingual since their ancestors needed to be. However, instead of using languages to hide their true identity, modern-day folks use them to broaden their ability to communicate their thoughts and feelings with others. Languages are not seen as sets of vocabulary so much as unique "moods"; and different languages are often sprinkled seemingly at random throughout Imaginary conversation and literature.

The men of Treadwellia speak in a wheezy, pursy assortment of breathless mmphs, and the women speak in a giggly assortment of hrms, from little babies all the way up to The Two Tubbies. These two languages operate under the same rules of grammar and enunciation, and each is completely understandable to the other's speakers. In fact, the question of whether these are two separate languages or merely two variants of one language is heavily debated in Treadwellian schools.

A unique feature of the mmphs and hrms is that the public considers the most rotund members of society the best speakers of either; because such people often labor more heavily to merely breathe, it takes more effort and focus to properly communicate in such ways. Therefore, the fattest folks in Treadwellia are naturally forced to better control their breathing and speaking in order to be understood at all. Perhaps this is one more reason why the utterances of Tubbius and Mrs. Tubbius are so highly revered. Being the portliest of all in the kingdom, The Royal Rotundities possess quite special gifts of speech!

Open Sea 20 nm east of the southern tip of Snoodum
Zenturio Peter Janssen felt at ease. The sun was shining and the sea was calm. The voyage to Hycronesia was one he and the 40-strong crew of his 92 meter long Bremen class corvette Bremen had performed several times already. This was the best weather they ever had for the ocean crossing between Avalon and Thule.

The route had led them from Blaumeisehaven along the South Frisian coast, then tracking the coastlines of The copper states and Snoodum. The rest of the journey would take them in a straight line to the coast of Galfni, then following the coastlines of West amerika and Sinyal before finally reaching Fortuna, capital of Hycronesia and the most important centre of trade along the west coast of Thule.

Janssen enjoyed not having to play nanny for freighters on this journey, although they would probably have to perform escort duty on the return trip. Their current mission was labelled as "patrol duty". The so called Translazarussian trade route that linked Cianlandia, Leonism, The copper states and Hycronesia was of paramount importance for the Imperium, and these days Imperial navy ships without a specific mission were often tasked to patrol it, just to make sure the high volume of trade passing through this area would be safe from pirates or hostile powers.

The Imperium was not at war with any other country, but its increasingly expanding influence in western Lazarus might be contentious for other powers, many of whose motives were poorly understood.

Out of routine, Janssen grabbed his binoculars and scanned the horizon. Nothing, except the coastline of Snoodum well behind them. Or wait, was that a ship to the far north? Janssen was not sure, because when he blinked he couldn't find it again...

OOC: Mzeusia, he might just have spotted your expedition ship for a split second.

Snoodish is spoken widely by everyone. I still have yet to design the language though I got the numbers written down. Snoodish is completely not related to any real world language. As for other languages spoken, there are none at the moment apart from the select few Foreign Ministry employees who need it. The Snoodian government is looking at expanding this though to better understand history culture science and life in general from other nations' perspectives. The Foreign Ministry is looking at creating a new branch that will most likely be called the Imperial Snoodian Foreign Languages branch.

OOC: Thanks. I like the possibility of an encounter between our nations. Leonism is a modern nation, almost at the edge of future technology, but its own ancient history is still very much present in its culture. It originated at the crossroads between Ancient Roman and Germanic cultures. The population ethnically predominantly German, but the Romans left their mark. Many terms and customs, such as the parade uniforms of the Imperiale Garde or the names of the military ranks are heavily influenced by their ancient Roman counterparts.

A sizeable part of the population would have a relatively good grasp of how an ancient Greco-Roman civilisation works and looks like...

The majority language of the Sacred Imperial States is Dinaden (Also spelled Denaden in English). It is a language formed from a fusion of the Gothic, Latin, and Iranic languages present within the territory of the SISD throughout its history. It's a language I'd spent a lot of time in the past constructing, but most of the files remain trapped on a netbook in storage somewhere. It does have a CALS entry. It's entirely fictional, and nothing like English, and is probably due for a revision.

The ancestral language of all the Mineral Triplets is Yngm, a tongue seen as strange by all today, even natives. It is extremely convoluted and difficult to master, so now it is used almost exclusively in poetry (it's good poetry though). As a communication device it is inferior to the languages of the modern world, so most day-to-day speech and official documents are in English. After English and Yngm, the most widespread language is German, which makes it easier to communicate to nations like Leonism and Loftegen 2. There is also a widespread conlang named Squirrelspeak, which consists of chirping and squeaking sounds. It is not yet officially administered, but a generation is growing up the nerds of which speak it fluently.
