Men fell where they where if they did not find cover. Luckily, the shell holes and debris that disfigured provided adequate cover to the assaulting troops. Slowly but surely, they had reached the gates of Ahmedabad only to find it was locked. They descended upon the doors with their axes, rifle butts and sabers, trying to force their way in as the defenders desperately held it shut. Finally, the force was too much for the Ahmedabadis to bear and soon, Pakistani troops where inside the city. The sepoys went to the walls to clear out the remaining enemy warriors while the grenadiers rushed to the palace to capture the defiant ruler of Ahmedabad.

Within 5 hours of fighting, the grenadiers and sepoys had captured the nawab of Ahmedabad and his family, 579 prisoners and had control of up to 87% of the city. By nightfall, the city had fallen to the Kingdom of Pakistan, captured 10,000 Ahmedabadis, excluding the royal family. The siege of Ahmedabad lasted 2 months, and left a total 18,800 dead and another 30,000 wounded.
