Currently, the year is 5781. Usually what you do is add 3760 to whatever Gregorian Year it is, but since Rosh HaShanah has already happened, it is 5781 right now.

Ok, I did not know that, but that’s actually a pretty cool little fact.

Darths and Droids is ranked 16th in the world and 1st in Forest for Most Primitive, scoring 1,096.72 on the Scary Big Number Scale.

The Ascendant Hive is ranked 229,050th in the world and 1,190th in Forest for Most Primitive, scoring -1407.52 on the Scary Big Number Scale.

Truly, we are opposites.

Does anyone know how regional influence is worked out, Forest is extremely high but I have seen regions with 15/30 nations but no WA that has zero influence also a region with WA but only one endorsement still zero influence. Also a region with 12 nations no WA but moderate regional power.

What gives a region influence and when does it kick in?

The following is a comprehensive guide to Regional Influence. Please direct any concerns or corrections to August.

1. What is Regional Influence?

Regional Influence is an automatically-generated measure of how powerful your nation is in your region. It is only relevant in a gameplay sense, and has no impact on roleplay. Influence was created in 2006 in response to the ability of players to eject large numbers of other nations and password regions unchecked. These actions contributed to the total destruction of many regions, an act known as "griefing." Influence, at its core, is designed to protect regions from this fate.

2. How do I get influence?

Influence is gained by every nation at every update, provided that nation has logged in at least once in the last week. If the nation is more than one week inactive, influence remains constant. For most nations, influence increases at a rate of one Soft Power Disbursement Rating (SPDR) point per update. For a WA nation, the influence gain is one plus its endorsement count, every update. For example, a WA nation with three endorsements would gain eight influence points per day, whereas a non-WA nation or a WA nation with no endorsements would gain only two influence points per day.

3. What can I use influence for?

Influence can be used to eject and ban nations or password regions. A nation's influence also protects it (to an extent) from ejection or banning by a delegate or Regional Officer. There are no other uses for influence.

4. Who can use influence?

Delegates and Regional Officers with Border Control authority can use influence. It costs a delegate one half of the target nation's influence to eject and ban them, and one third of the target nation's influence to simply eject them. The cost for Regional Officers is twice as high as the cost for delegates, so it costs a BC-enabled Regional Officer all of the target nation's influence to eject and ban them, and two thirds to simply eject them.

Nations with Border Control authority can also use influence to password regions. To set a visible password, a delegate or Regional Officer must spend 20 points per nation in the region, with a minimum of 200 points. To set an invisible password, the cost is 40 points per nation in the region, with a minimum of 400 points. Removing a password requires no influence.

Founders can eject, ban, and password at no cost to their influence.

I thought I had enough influence to eject/ban/password, but I ran out! Why? Skip to #11 for a possible explanation.

These are a measure of relative influence. In other words, they show how much influence you have compared to the total influence present in the region. A nation residing in a very small region might have very little influence, but have a high rating. Conversely, a nation residing in an extremely large region might have a great deal of influence, but have a very low rating, because they have a very small portion of the overall influence pie.

Before a region passes its first major update, all resident nations will be displayed as Hermits.

6. How much influence do I have?

The easiest way to check your absolute (non-relative) influence value is to go to your Rank page and click on the link for Influence. This number represents the exact amount of influence you have in all regions combined. It is possible to have influence in multiple regions at once, but generally speaking, the vast majority or all of your influence will be from one region.

7. What is Regional Power?

A region's Regional Power rating is a measure of the total influence present in the region, relative to the sum of all influence in the world (496M points as of July 22, 2021). The ratings, along with percentages of the world's influence and an estimation of their absolute influence values, are as follows.

0% to 0.01% (roughly 0 to 50k points): Low
0.01% to 0.05% (roughly 50k to 250k points): Moderate
0.05% to 0.2% (roughly 250k to 1M points): High
0.2% to 1% (roughly 1M to 5M points): Very High
1% and up (roughly 5M points or more): Extremely High

Regional Power is not displayed in regions with a Low rating.

It usually takes many years to achieve a rating of Extremely High, and only a small number of regions have ever reached that point, including some of the game-created Feeder and Sinker regions. As time passes and the cumulative value of the world's influence increases, achieving higher Regional Power ratings grows more difficult, and some regions fall to lower ratings. Over the course of 2020 alone, the nominal threshold for Very High increased by 200k points, or 28%.

8. How much influence does my region have?

The easiest way to determine a region's absolute influence is by going to any nation's Influence census page, clicking the "Other" link at the bottom, and adding the region to the chart. This will tell you the average influence of all its nations. Multiply that number by the region's population to find the total influence. The population number used for this calculation must be the nation count at 0335 EST / EDT. When finding total influence retroactively, population numbers on regional History pages can be used.

On rare occasions, there will be a region with more influence than its Regional Power rating would suggest. This happens when high-influence nations move in from other regions and bring up the average. A region's Regional Power rating only takes into account influence from that particular region. However, the average influence number includes any influence left over from resident's past regions. The effect of this is usually negligible.

9. Can I use my influence in other regions?

No, your influence in one region cannot be used to eject, ban, or password in another region. However, there is some amount of carry-over. If you have influence in one region, then move to another permanently, you will have more influence in the second region than you would had you started from scratch. This is especially the case if you have more endorsements in the new region than you did in the old one (ie, your influence gain is higher than it was).

10. Why am I losing influence?

There are four possible reasons for this:

a) You ceased to exist. Nations deleted for inactivity immediately begin to lose influence rapidly (though not as fast as nations that leave their regions). Additionally, when a nation ceases to exist, all influence it holds from other regions is instantly erased. Thus, if a high-influence nation is ejected from Region A, ceases to exist in The Rejected Realms, and is revived the next day, it will have no influence left from Region A.

b) You left your region for at least one update. Leaving a region briefly does not cost you influence, but if you leave the region when it updates, you begin to lose influence. If you are gone for a long time, you will probably lose all your influence in that region. Influence decay following a permanent move is calculated as follows: four points lost after the first day (two updates), nine points after the second day, and fourteen after the third. From then on, the day-to-day loss increases by eight points per day. For example, a nation that left its region two weeks ago will have lost 705 points, provided it had that much to begin with. Meanwhile, it will have begun to accumulate influence in its new region.

c) You are in a Feeder or Sinker. These include the five Pacifics, Lazarus, Osiris, Balder, and The Rejected Realms. Influence in these regions expires after roughly six months, so after spending half a year there, your influence may flatline. If you have more endorsements than you did when you arrived, it may continue to increase for a while. If you have fewer endorsements, your influence will begin to fall. The exact formula for influence decay in feeders and sinkers is unknown.

The influence of a nation residing in a feeder or sinker will not decay below 4015 points, which is the influence accumulated in half a year by a nation with ten endorsements. A nation with ten endorsements or fewer may accumulate this much influence before plateauing.

d) You spent influence without realizing it. If you are a delegate or Regional Officer and you ejected or banned a nation by accident (or on purpose), it cost you influence. The cost does not show up until after the next update.

11. Why did my influence change between updates? or, Why did I run out of influence for Border Control actions?

Both of these phenomena are due to the "influence advance." The amount of influence displayed for a nation after it updates is actually the amount of influence it will have after the next update, provided nothing changes before then. In other words, a nation's true influence level is the displayed value, minus its endorsement count, minus one. If that nation's endorsement count increases before its next update, its displayed influence will as well. Conversely, if the endorsement count drops, or the nation resigns from the WA and resets its count to zero, it will lose as many influence points as it had endorsements. A nation's influence level at one update is not "locked in" until after the next update.

For most players, the influence advance is inconsequential. However, it can have serious effects for regional officials and military gameplayers. If a twenty-endorsement delegate has an influence score of 100 and wants to eject a nation with a score of 300, they should be able to do so. Once the influence advance is taken into account, that delegate's true influence score is only 79, and they will not be able to eject any nation with a score of over 237.

So basically you gain 1+amount of endorsements every update, which means a non WA would get 2 points a day and a WA with 3 endorsements would get 8 per day

Regional influence is just the sum influence of a region (Σx)

I think you're talking about the regional power rating; it's a measure of the region's influence relative to the rest of the world

0% to 0.01% (roughly 0 to 36k points): Low
0.01% to 0.05% (roughly 36k to 179k points): Moderate
0.05% to 0.2% (roughly 179k to 718k points): High
0.2% to 1% (roughly 718k to 3.59M points): Very High
1% and up (roughly 3.6M points or more): Extremely High

Forest has the extremely high rating because it's old and active, making it one of few; those regions you mentioned probably don't have 0 sum influence, but likely have the 0-0.01% low rating so the game doesn't bother to display it

I think it's all a gameplay thing really

Really cool idea, especially the establishment of an ''eco'' country. But, as above posters have stated, nearly impossible to achieve. Like, British Columbia isn't gonna just go and separate all of a sudden. And Washington and Oregon literally can't. So, a little hiccup in that plan. However, I do think a sort of transnational environmental agreement between the three of them to ensure that their very unique environments are protected. Like, the Cascadia Pact or something.

hi everyone!!
as Portugal's ambassador to Forest i decided to leave you here with our presentation to UCR con 3, a inter-regional convention, because I can't see Forest there

Portugal, a... unique region

Hello to all, we thank you immensely for having us in this conference; it is truly an honour. Most of you won't know who we are, but we hope that could be changed with what we're about to tell you and we also hope you will give us a chance to know you better, while you know us better.

Let's begin!

Who we are
More than 15 years ago, our region was founded by Platinum bees, our Messiah, who will be back, like Schwarzenneger, to bring us eternal peace and lead us to infinite prosperity in these dark times.

We have always been an odd region, one of, if not THE biggest non-English region in NS (regarding the number of WA accounts) and we are really proud of what makes us unique: our culture, our particular sense of humour and the way we created a little corner in this gigantic game for Portuguese-speaking players to have fun and to not be all that lost; we created a place where all of our friends can reconnect with people just like them, a rarity in NS, independentily of political affiliation, race, sexual orientation...etc.

Culture
As a region, we value our originality very much and have a great interest in cultural topics, having developed many activities in that area. From the creation of literary and musical contests, dedicated to our unique language, to an avant-garde magazine inspired by our nation's historical writers, and not forgetting several original comics and our own newspaper, there is a bit of everything for everyone. Below you can check some of our cultural dispatches (unfortunately they haven't been translated) by clicking the images.

Apart from that, we also offer to any regional citizen a plethora of roleplaying games inspired by different historical and political scenarios, from a Portuguese-parliament simulator where you take the role of a party to a World War II scenario in a world torn by three different ideologies. Great stories always come out of these little games:

But this isn't even scratching the surface! Apart from all the cultural activities, we take pride in our flourishing meme culture. By never taking anything truly seriously, and trying to make the best out of any situation, we have accomplished some great feats over the years. As an example, after one of our citizens, Ofiussia, made a bid for World Assembly Secretary-General, we supported him on the plataform of getting the website rid of all Dutch (as a reference to a recent diplomatic altercation between Portugal and the Netherlands). Or the time Northportugalinho went around several regions proclaiming his love for the Portuguese nations, ending with his ban from the game. That's Portugal in a nutshell.

We have also acomplished to create a functional democratic system in which, every 6 months, we elect our own delegate, who serves the people and has a mandate from them; making frequent coups a thing of the past! The way we see it, regular elections incentivize people to be more active and take part in the region's activities while also giving them the opportunity to directly choose their representative and safeguarding our security. Now, we are hoping that our regional personality will be enough to make us be the talk of this conference and, who knows, the entire game, hopefully for good reasons this time...

But enough of me talking about how great we are, let our citizens tell you that themselves instead:

Lusitanialand wrote:"I’ve been on Nationstates for over 5 years, joined Portugal almost from the beginning and never moved my WA nation to another region. Since I arrived to the region, I found a place where there's a vibrant community and interesting debates. Unlike many other regions, the members of Portugal have a broad range of political ideas, from communists to reactionaries. Sometimes it’s hard to keep everyone satisfied but overall it’s a friendly region where I learned a lot about politics. We managed to build a democratic system that garanties freedom of speech and respect for all opinions. Portugal is the most important Lusophone and non-English speaking region in Nationstates. I recommend it for all the portuguese, brazilian and other Lusophone people."

~ Lusitanialand, former delegate

Peterandia wrote:"What can be said about this region? Not much. The end, thanks for reading!
Ok, that would be a bit anti-climatic. The person who put me up to write this told me that it had to be somewhat serious, and brief. Three glasses of whisky later I can proudly say I met none of those goals.

So, what is our region all about? In a sense, I’ve been with this region since many of its current members were in diapers. But in another sense I’m newer than them. University, love life, several lousy jobs, I left this region nearly a decade ago. It really shows the spirit of this place that I was able to return now, a decade later, and find a place here.

Now, this is not a place for long winded projects. If you love long World Assembly projects, you came to the wrong place loser. If you are a sane, normal, sensitive person, stay away!
This is a place where crass jokes are made, sarcasm flows like a river, political opinions are sometimes normal but often strange.
Here you will find someone who claims he is Xi Jinping, liberal-conservatives defending communist tyranny as a joke, inside jokes and dark humour that is so dark it should be picking cotton, memes (Editor here, I guess we will just move on from the slavery joke i guess), a long running single-person roleplay that can be summed up as “Portuguese British Empire IN SPACE”, right-wing nutjobs who claim to be a government in exile, trolls (a lot of trolls), lousy boring poetry, and in our porn section of discord we post sexy pictures of our prime-ministers, yes, the lunatics have taken over the asylum.
Sometimes you will find long pointless political posts about stuff 99% of the population does not care about. Other times we just discuss elections as if they are horse races, and even bet on it.

In essence, this is what happens when a small band of political dorks from all walks of live and all ages mix together. So, to conclude, let me say that there is someone out there for everyone. In the case of lunatics present in this region, that person is a psychiatrist.
This region is terrible, and no sane person should ever visit it.

I like it a lot."

~ Peterandia, local revolutionary

Editor's note: Portugal and its government do not in any way approve of slavery or other kinds of inhumane practices, we just like comedy a lot, please don't sue us, thank you very much!

Portugalio wrote:"Portugal is, at its core, a non-english region for Portuguese people. However, it would be very wrong to assume that there is nothing more to say about this region.

Portugal is a safe space for Portuguese speaking players, yes, but it is also a space of debate, where players with all types of political ideologies can come together and discuss a wide variety of topics. What I, personally, like the most about this region it’s the freedom we’ve got to discuss any topic (without insulting anyone of course), and that’s something we fight really hard to maintain.
If politics isn’t your thing and you prefer roleplays, then Portugal is still a viable option. In Portugal we always have a roleplay or two going on and they cover a wide variety of topics, from politics and economics to history (Paradox should sponsor this region, honestly). Moreover, many players in Portugal have their own role play going on and make sure to share it with everyone.

Of course, Portugal has changed through the years, no region stays the same, but I speak from experience, Portugal sure is a region to behold. The democratic system of electing a delegate is rare in the NS universe, but in Portugal we managed to implement it successfully, contributing to a climate of debate and curiosity.

Overall, this region is incredible, what’s not to like here?"

~ Portugalio, former Minister of Foreign Affairs

Caxina wrote: I joined NS around 2 years ago and, well, I kinda settled down here in this tiny piece of forum that we can proudly say "ISTO É PORTUGAL CRLH" (swears ins portuguese).

I was never a very active member of this community: to be honest, college, internships, exam season, classes ate my time a lot but coming to NS just to check the forum and seeing it erupting in flames because of some sily discussion was always a good way to pass time and to laugh it off.
Now, somehow, I've risen to a position of power in this region and I could be very proper and formal but screw that! We have a Delegate with good music taste (the man likes ABBA, he gets my vote), a vice-delegate that must like to be busy a lot cause the man doesn't stop, and an overall great team. It's amazing, it's huge and we are going to make spain return Olivença to us and pay for it!

But back to my personal experience... I don't remember much about when I joined, but I do remember meeting great people here. People that now may have left the game or may have continued in this nonsense region along with me and many others. This was an adventure and a great one at that. I would recommend it to every portuguese folk out there; yes we may not be extremists and we do not allow insults, but hey, we have public decency, jokes, many strange debates, great people and good music taste.

To sum it up, it's great, it's huge, it's amazing and I really like it a lot. Wouldn't leave it for anything.

WARNING: yes, Spain will give us land and pay for it, we are not gonna compromise in regards to our need to lambast Spain, I'm sorry (not really).

I hope you liked our friends' short stories and now, I'm glad to introduce you the author of the most brilliant campaign for WA secretary-general: he is the man, the myth, the terror of the Netherlands and the destroyer of windmils.... it's Ofiussia!!

Some of the posters designed for the campaign

Hi there Mr. Ofiussia, we are very glad to have you here with us!

    Thank you.

Well, we are here to interview you about your historic, may I say, colossal run for WA Secretary General. Tell us, what was your motivation, what inspired you to make such a brilliant campaign?

Well, it all started in the first day of the elections. Herya asked if anyone wanted to run in Portugal. I thought it would be fun and then I said I would run. I never thought that the campaign would go so far.

Yes, but what did you have in mind, what did you think about it? I'm sure you didn't just want to be a good and competent Secretary General, and it couldn't possibly be about power.... I mean.... So, what was your weird reason and did you know you would have your region's backing the all time?

Actually, I didn’t even think before that. I just acted. In the beginning I would never imagine that we would be in the Top 10.

Yes, the region's campaign, your campaign, got in the top 10 for sometime, that's an amazing feat!
But I think our readers really want to know what was it about, that bold, "act first think later", candidacy: what does "for a Dutchless NS" really mean?

We all hate the Dutch. Even the Dutch hate themselves. We, the Portuguese, are the only people that can fight the dutch until victory, or death, either way we win. The truth is that we did it!

But wouldn't you say that the dutch have the upper hand? I mean, people are saying that the winner was the pro-Dutch candidate and when people say stuff, it must be true, it stands to reason. I, myself, would label all non-Portuguese candidates as pro-dutch and if one of them wins anything then the terrorists have won the game.
What's your take on that?

I don’t think this was a complete defeat. This candidacy gave this cause a voice. Now, in the next elections, when the next Portuguese is running, he will win.

I too am confident in that and, therefore, delusional. It's nice to think about it really.
Are there any other players you would like to mention and who deserve credit for your and your region's acomplishment?

Thank you very much for your time, I think everyone in NS is grateful for our brave conquest. We hope they are prepared for our next campaign for a Dutchless NS. Is there anything you would like to add or say to the generous people at UCR Con 3?

I would like them to search about our great region and stand by for the rest of the Convention. Thank you!

And live from New York, it's Saturday Ni- actually our lawyers said I can't say that withouth paying... so we'll just move on.

DISCLAIMER: We don't hate the Dutch, but at the time their PM said some harsh things about our country and so it seemed like the perfect reason to make a sh*t show in a serious candidacy in a not so serious game. In hindsight... we were absolute geniuses, but the rules in this conference tell us not to bully anyone so I think we will just say we are cool with dutch people, they are always high anyways, they don't care.

And now, a short messsage from our sponsors, the Foreign Ministry of the region of Portugal:

Hi there,

If you liked our region and if you want to create an embassy with us, just talk with me, Ofiussia, to ask for one.
We are always available for interregional activities, like roleplays, cultural magazines and other things.

If you want to have an embassy with us, you must not be an ideological region, you must have a WA Delegate and, finally, respect our Messiah Platinum Bees, through every circumstances.

Have a good convention,
Ofiussia
Foreign Minister of Portugal

And to wrap this up, a quick word from our beloved leader, the secretary-general of our red hearts, the Delegate:

Salutations Earthlings, it is I, your new Portuguese trading partner. I have arrived from far away in my caravel, packed with spices and goods which I intend to sell you, whether you like it or not. Submit or face annihilation (we'll cough on you)!

Portuguese History can be summed up pretty much like this, and I feel that's nice. Portugal never had a big population so we couldn't support a large enough army to raid and conquer our enemies nor enough colonists to populate deserted areas. As so, with constrained resources, we always opted for a different approach (well, different in the medieval sense): live and let live (forget the intercontinental slave trade). And that's what we did. We went around the world (a fact which no Portuguese will let you forget) proclaiming our undying love for our country and just selling stuff, with no desire of getting involved in any major conflict.

Unfortunately, in the real world you can't always get what you want and our rising star as a world power quickly faded. But our ancestors didn't know the power of the Internet and all the ways it can join us together more than they ever could in their worn out wooden boats, ha! But just like them, we want to leave you with this in mind: we, the Portuguese, are generally a peaceful people, and we want nothing less than to be good friends with whoever crosses our paths. So, thank you for reading all of this... madness, we sincerly appreciate it and if you feel inclined to take a chance (on me) on this oh so great region, send us a telegram or post a message on our message board, we would be delighted to have you around!

And don't forget, if you have spices hidden we'll come to your house and force you to sell them! Sleep well

With an undying passion

Hey Nation of ecologists I was looking at your nation and you say Environment and people first but your currency is a leaf? Lol im wondering why you did that. NO OFFENSE PLEASE DON'T TAKE THAT OFFENSIVELY.

True, that is one theory and a strong one, but there are 3 others also. All I can say that we think we know things but we don't. We are still pretty much just hairless apes with big brains.

Consciously ignores the various states (primarily south/southwestern Democratic states plus Minnesota & Virginia) that would make for an unclean map, leaves the Red part with no direct access to Alaska (and also essentially no Pacific Ocean access) while the Blue portion is basically cut in half. Neither country would have manageable borders or completely effective control of their territory unless we're presuming some EU kind of travel arrangements (which the article mentions, but aren't exactly quite so simple as suggested).

And of course, as always the whole Red/Blue state thing completely ignores the large populations of the opposite party that every state has (quite aside of the aforementioned Dem states given to the Red country, plus every swing state), and the simple fact that the dichotomy is more about the relative size of urban, suburban, and rural populations.

Edit: I get that the article or the link here was probably in jest, but still.

I don't think he was being serious.

Speaking of politics however, it is nearing the start of campaign season for Nation of Ecologists, who is having an election on December 15th, 2030 to elect its House of the People. The current governing coalition is surprisingly stable, given that it is a coalition between a centre-left average, everyday Green Party, a centrist, green-liberal party and a left-wing, eco-socialist party. The last election was held in 2025, when NoE was first formed. The Ecologist Party is the official opposition, and has had steady support with its constituents. Power to the People and Planet was a Green-Socialist Party split that, along with the Liberty Union (a Green-Liberal Party split) is contesting its first ever election, and has steadily been eating away at the Green-Socialist Party in the polls, nearing the point of overtaking them. Along with those two party, a further 4 parties are trying to enter the HoP for the first time, and it's looking good for one of them (the Party for the Animals). The Party for Freedom and Democracy is doing comically bad in polls, getting under 0.5% in a good amount of them, and has even gone under the fringe Earth Party polls. It will be interesting if PPP's increase in support will affect the outcome. (I'll be posting a thread about this on the 20th.)

I have seen variations of this pop up quite often and it always makes me chuckle...

So I made a new puppet in the Council of Fardelshufflesteins called Eco-fardelshufflestein, and while I originally intended for it simply to be a radically-environmentalist nation, I’m now finding it boring because it’s so similar to Middle Barael, so I think I’m going to make it an eco-fascist nation instead.

The only problem is that fascism is not simply authoritarian, as it is also economically-centrist and socially-conservative and also hyper-nationalistic.

So other than being authoritarian, what should I do to make it eco-fascist (minus the racism part)?

I have already made it communist (i.e. state control of the economy), but it should not be socialist (i.e. equality of income). This is because most fascist countries were economically-speaking what’s called “national syndicalists” (where the populace is organized into nationalistic state-controlled labor unions) and “state capitalists” (where there is a capitalist market-economy dominated by large corporations but controlled by the state). This is not all that far off from Modern Chinese Economic Policy, except more economically-nationalistic and less laissez-faire within the state capitalism.

So other than authoritarianism, radical environmentalism, national syndicalism, and state capitalism, what should I do to make Eco-Fardelshufflestein an eco-fascist state (minus the racism)?

Make America Great Again! *chuckles*

Aaaaanyway, I was thinking about making a puppet that is more environmentally friendly than Julunaphra, cuz that seems to be the way things are here in Forest. I was thinking of calling it Econaphra, what are your guys’s thoughts?
