The hard-nosed, cynical, humorless population of 6.22 billion AnnaKians are ruled with an iron fist by the dictatorship government, which ensures that no-one outside the party gets too rich. In their personal lives, however, citizens are relatively unoppressed; it remains to be seen whether this is because the government genuinely cares about its people, or if it hasn't gotten around to stamping out civil rights yet.

School lessons are constantly interrupted by 'teacher needs a break' time, the new national campaign exhorts men to "Show Some Class - Don't Sit On Your Ass", atheistic refugees haven't got a prayer of being granted asylum, and legislators toe the party line lest the Sergeant-at-Arms decide to conduct "truncheon practice" on the backbench. Crime, especially youth-related, is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. AnnaK's national animal is the Snorkasaurus, which is also the nation's favorite main course, and its national religion is Paganism.
