First and foremost, is it a language isolate? If so, you want to work on your history to make sure the language fits your culture's values. If not, what is it related to? Is there a proto-Meddecahn that we can trace roots to?
Second, you focus on semantics. X corresponds with Y in terms of meaning. What about syntax? What order do the words go in and why?
