Kranostav wins TNP delegate election

The office of WA delegate in The North Pacific is possibly one of the most powerful elected offices on NationStates, as the winner will be able to hold full executive powers in the largest non-puppet storage region on the site, and will have more votes in the WA than any other nation on the site. Just over a week ago voting started for the positions of WA delegate, Vice-delegate and Speaker, as well as a special judicial election. Voting was done under Alternative Vote, and voters were able to state whether they wanted to re-open nominations.
Minor News
  • The Confederacy of Layem, a region notable for it's unintentional involvement in the so-called 'Drewpocalypse earlier this year, announced that it was issuing a travel ban to Citizens Alliance of Democracy, to prevent rising tensions between the two regions.

Incumbent delegate Prydania chose not to stand due to RL commitments, so it was a race between various other notable members of the region for the delegacy. Former Minister of World Assembly Affairs and Minister of Foreign Affairs Kranostav ran a campaign that promised making improvements to the North Pacific Army, more work in the World Assembly to increase TNP's power, and reaching out to UCRs, alongside a sizable amount of domestic policies. Meanwhile former Foreign Affairs Minister Praeceps's campaign focused on administration and culture, with a promise to open up applications to become a minister to the public. Also running was Pigeonstan, former Speaker Gorundu and famous card collector 9003.

The results were fairly close, as Kranostav pulled out an early lead in the first preference votes, but picked up few second and third preference votes, meaning that the race came down between them and Praeceps for the victory. Kranostav just about held on and officially became delegate-elect of The North Pacific while the transfer between delegates happens. In the race for Vice-Delegate, only two candidates stood, Dreadton and Bobberino. Dreadton received over 72% of the votes, winning the race for Vice-Delegate. Three candidates stood for Speaker, Comfed, Lady Raven Wing and Madjack, who won with a commanding 74% of the vote.

There is not much unusual about this election, as the policies proposed by the candidates are standard for GCRs and TNP in particular, yet this is an
interesting time at the moment, as TNP's power and influence grows in the WA. Whether this growth will continue, or will the power of large UCRs overpower this influence, is something that no-one can predict.🟥

Mysterious TBH puppet relocation?

Those who either check the list of the largest regions or jump points to see if operations are happening, might have noticed that a new large region called 'The City of Ba Sing Se'. Multiple puppets from The Black Hawks have relocated to this region, alongside some new puppets as well. The region is at well over 3,000 nations now, gaining those nations in less than a week. In NS there is always a reason for mass-creation of puppets, and this article will attempt to find out those reasons.

Possibly the most obvious reason would be that it is a new jump point, which is a region where raiders move from into regions being raided, and are used because they update later than all other regions. However, this is quickly disproved as the region's regional officers are not from military regions, such as Thalassia and Refugia. Also, the region updates much earlier than required for a jump point. Another possibility is card farming, but we would probably see much more issue-answering and inter-regional co-operation for card farming is rare.

I think one of the most likely possibilities is N-day. We are already seeing inter-regional alliances being created for N-day, and co-operation between these regions is probably only possible under those circumstances, but we would probably be seeing embassies being created with the involved regions. Also the name is very unusual for an N-day faction. One may suspect the regions are simply trying to hide this information, but this might not be true. There is little need to hide information about N-day factions until N-day itself arrives, by when plans are usually kept secret, aside from the fact that some cannot access means to communicate such as discord, but that is a different matter.

I still see very few reasons why this region has been created aside from N-day or possibly card farming. If this becomes an N-day faction, then it is more proof of what this year's N-day is already shaping up to be. Big inter-regional factions with mass puppet armies. However there are still mysteries, such as why such fundamentally different regions are co-operating, or why embassies haven't been created and why the name is so weird. We will no doubt know soon🟥

How Large are Regional Communities?

Most active gameplayers and roleplayers will notice that however large a region's population is, only a small proportion of the nations in the region are ever actively involved, sometimes through inactivity or through simply issue-answering instead of being involved in the region.

Let's take a look at a relatively large defender region, Order of the Gray Wardens. The region has 222 nations at the time of writing. TGW has a purely onsite defender role, known as the Guardians. By looking at the data from these operations, we find that in the past 2 and a half months, 20 nations have taken part in operations. In terms of the wardens, who are the offsite-based defenders, numbers are harder to come by without combing through loads of forum posts. But what we do know, is that these players are not going to be the other 200 nations in the region. A realistic estimate would be about 15-40 nations. Now some puppets are in the region some of the time, but the vast majority are either inactive or simply answering issues.

Now let's look at RP. The Western Isles is a region that is mainly focused on RP, although there is a relatively sizable focus on regional politics. By looking at the region's actively updated map, and using the raw feature and google chrome's find feature, we find that there are 52 nations involved. This is just over a quarter of the region's 192 nations. A safe assumption when including puppets and politics-focused nations would still mean that less than half of the region is involved in regional activities.

To conclude, there is no simple way to work out how many nations are actively involved in regions, because of puppets and some information that isn't available. But I'd say from pure experience of regions that less than half of the nations in a region are involved in activities beyond occasional RMB posts. One possible way to work this out could be election turnouts, but this relies on citizenship, which can sometimes complicate matters. NS was designed to be a game played for a very short time, that's why only 30 issues were originally made, and why RMB posts originally disappeared after only 10 posts. We, the NS community made it into what it is today, through roleplay, politics and R/D. No wonder some new players aren't involved in their regions, or only answer issues. Issues appear as a notification, something that makes the player want to answer them. 'Military gameplay' can sometimes confuse new players, and new players don't always understand RP. Does this matter? Probably not; there's no problem with players just answering issues, although they might go inactive quicker🟥

Hi all! Long time to see. I just want to thank Ashoy for agreeing to have me publish the first part of the visit to Snoodum. It has been great to work together on this and I look forward to doing more together in the future. It's a long one so get comfortable!

Snudgeskooge stood surrounded by soldiers and police in traditional Snoodian uniforms, the Snudgeskooge’s Palace Herald Camera Teams dotted all around, ready to capture this historic moment. A journalist was hopping from foot to foot to keep the blood flowing. They’d all gotten up rather early and The God-Emperor’s watch struck one as the plane landed, coming to a perfect stop. The camera crews wheeled closer and the soldiers moved with Snudgeskooge as he walked over. The wind died down as Ahan stepped out of the plane, waving an smiling, his black suit and tie stark against the well-pressed white shirt, his shoes shined.

Snudgeskooge raised a hand in greeting taking in the man fully as he stepped down the plane stairs and over to His Divine Imperial Majesty. ‘Greetings Ahan.’ Snudgeskooge said offering his hand to shake. Ahan took the outstretched hand, his own grip strong and firm, meeting the God-Emperor’s eyes.

The pair of them turned to the cameras, the click, click of shutters going as the camera crews documented everything. The reporter stepped forward after getting a small nod from the God-Emperor. The two leaders now stood side by side as Snudgeskooge busied himself with smiling and looking at the journalist.

‘I’m from the Snudgeskooge’s Palace Herald.’ The woman said. ‘What are your thoughts on Snoodum now? Any thing you’ve heard? Anything worrying? Reassuring?’

Mr Shetty spoke with a voice used to public speaking, a commanding voice and one that spoke with great hope while being under no illusion that the two countries saw eye to eye on indeed even a few issues. ‘Having just stepped off the plane, I have to say the night sky is wonderful. I do love seeing the stars. I’m also very much looking forward to finding common ground with Snoodum to deepen our relationship. Now, this may confuse some. To address that I say that we should be striving to bring all nations, regardless of outlook and way of doing things to the table of negotiation in order to conduct business that strengthens ties and brings us all closer together.’

Snudgeskooge, growing quickly annoyed at the cold and the questions, waved off the journalist and she respectfully stepped back. He then turned to the ten APCs that idled nearby. ‘We’ll be making our way to the Palace in these, Mr Shetty. Can I call you Ahan?

Ahan turned to His Divine Imperial Majesty. ‘Of course, there’s no need for such formalities now.’ He smiled as Snudgeskooge nodded his understanding.

The pair of them where led into the back of one of the APCs were four soldiers already sat, with another two sitting beside them both as the column of armoured vehicles rumbled into life and set off along the road. Snudgeskooge gestured through the small windows of the vehicle, the grill covering it making it difficult to look outside much. ‘Ahan, if you look outside, you can Snudgeskooge’ Palace go by!’ He shouted over the roar of the engines. ‘It’s all a bit confusing. My Palace, also named Snudgeskooge’s Palace, is usually just called the Palace. You’ll notice the city architecture is rather intricate and the buildings colourful. Many cartoons outside of Snoodum get this wrong. It’s all drab greys and blacks. As you can see, however, we aren’t as dreary over here as you might have been led to believe! The same can be seen in my Palace though, admittedly, it is historic and has been the seat of leadership for as long as Snoodum, and Galgaria before that have existed.’ What the God-Emperor knew was about but didn’t point out were the ubiquitous cameras, on buildings, in buildings, on lampposts, in trees and in amongst the eyes of statues that dotted the streets and parks they whizzed by. He had never liked the idea of big tall polls for cameras. The view was much nicer and the surveillance no less effective when the cameras were smaller and less visible.

Driving up to the gates of the Palace, the convoy were stopped by three soldiers in the guard hut and the lead soldier opened the top hatch of the APC and spoke to them. A few seconds later, the convoy drove past the gates and into the courtyard where soldiers paraded in the small square outside and around to the left where the garage was located. Pulling in, the APC’s rear doors opened and Snudgeskooge stepped out and down the ramp, gesturing to the side door. ‘It’s just through here, Ahan. I had the servants prepare some food for us while we discuss business. I prefer to get it out of the way first rather than waiting around with a cloud above our heads.’ He smiled at the Ashoyian leader before a servant opened the door to the rest of the Palace and they walked down a corridor, up a couple flight of long, carpeted, gilded stairs, walked down some more corridors all while passing more servants and eventually into a room with a round table in the centre, statues and suits of armour around the edges and heavy curtains pulled back from a large window that looked out on palace grounds, a mixture of trees, grass and water features. The chandelier that hung from the ceiling was beautifuly carved and coated in gold leaf, shedding light to all corners and illuminating the intricacies of the wood grain.

Snudgeskooge gestured to a seat. ‘Please, take a seat. As you can see, I compiled the relevant details…’ He took a seat. ‘into folders.’

A servant came in moments later with a pitcher of orange juice and one of water, setting them down on the table before inclining his head towards the God-Emperor and Mr Shetty. ‘Anything else I can get you, Your Excellency?’, he looked at Mr Shetty with practiced professionalism. ‘No thank you, I believe we have everything?’ He turned to the God-Emperor.

‘That’ll be all for, thank you.’ Snudgeskooge said. The servant once again inclined his head and left, closing the door softly as he did so.

Snudgeskooge turned his attention back to Ahan. ‘Now. Down to business. I’m under the impression you wish to discuss trade…and some ‘deals’?’ He flicked the folder open, lacing his fingers as his eyes read the titles of the various proposals.

‘Surely, Your Immensity, that can wait? I would prefer to be out and active now, I tend to get cooped up on a plane.’

Snudgeskooge looked up, taking a second before he responded. ‘Of course, we can do this tonight or tomorrow. I can show you the extensive sports facilities we have here at the Palace.’ His Divine Imperial Majesty rose from his chair, stretching as he did so and going over to the window. ‘I hear the weather will still hold. I don’t suppose you’d like to go play some games? Sports? I have an archery range, gun range, cricket pitch, horse riding track, golf, running, triple jump. You name it. I can have the servants set it up. There are teams of servants if we need more players. I let them play on the grounds on their breaks and when their shifts end.’

‘Who doesn't enjoy an intense game of Polo eh? I hope that you are good cause boy oh boy Ashoyians are known to destroy their opponents at Polo. Your Immensity, before we get down to the game, I want to tell you something that has been bothering me through my whole trip from Treadwellia to Snoodum. I will be frank with you; I honestly don't feel safe here for some reason. Mind you, it’s got nothing to do with you, but I have a gut feeling that my life is in danger here at Snoodum. To add to my gut-wrenching feelings, the Ashoyian Intelligence Agency has informed me that my political opponents want me gone. They might be tracking my movements as we speak. However, I am sure that your army is capable enough to defend me and you if the need arises. That being said, Your Majesty, I don't want this to put the brakes on my tour of Snoodum. I've heard that you are a sore loser Your Majesty. We at Ashoy take our polo very seriously and we never like to lose.’ Ahan laughed.

Snudgeskooge internally bristled at the comments, biting his tongue before forcing a smile. ‘Well, I will tell that I don’t take kindly to those who would presume to know anything about me.’

A silence spread across the room until, finally, the two leaders made their way out of the room, down some more stairs and corridors and, after some time to one of the many sets of doors that led outside and onto the grounds, all the while followed by secret service and uniformed soldiers. The fresh air and distant sounds of a game of cricket being played came to them as Snudgeskooge waved to the building a short walk away. It was large and tastefully built, blending in with the other outbuildings that were dotted around in the grass and surrounding the Palace. ‘This, is the sports room. Those cricketers you can hear will come here after their game and put everything away. Almost everyone comes here afterwards. We have all the sports I could think of, want or need to play. As you can see, the stables are over there.’ Snudgeskooge gestured to a wing of the building with horse’s heads looking out of their windows and a set of large double doors for leading them in and out. A few servants were carrying what was clearly riding gear inside, a couple horses being led through the doors by their riders. ‘The only thing we don’t have is a swimming pool. That’s on the other side. Fully heated, outdoors though with a roof over it and screening enough to keep leaves from blowing in. The roof is completely retractable, you understand. If the sun can heat everything, why not let it? Those who go swimming get their own little building close to the pool.’

Snudgeskooge smiled at Ahan, as they reached the doors to the building and the door was opened by another servant, this one on duty. Directly to the left led a small corridor for the jockeys to get to and from the stables with the rest of the room having large screened rooms for the multitude of sports and games available. A servant walked over to him, the bodyguards parting. ‘Do you need anything, Your Divine Imperial Majesty?’

‘Some horses for polo, please.’ The God-Emperor said. The servant walked off with a nod and Snudgeskooge continued. ‘As you’ll see, the changing rooms are behind the equipment racks. We have things in, well, almost every size. No Tubbian is ever fitting in anything unless they bring their own equipment, but we do try and cater for everyone. Just don’t be too fat and you’ll find something.’ Snudgeskooge paused to wave to some servants in running clothes. ‘You may notice everything, other than the stable, of course, can be moved around here. For example, if I want the archery moved closer to the front, I might swap it out with the changing rooms for basketball. The servants can move the signs, the lockers, the benches, everything. That way, I can have the sports I play the most at the front. Everything else is pushed to the back in alphabetical order. Some of these sports, I’ve only played a few times because it was recommended and then I let them go. Some of them the servants requested. We just have a gym at the very back behind those doors,’ The God-Emperor pointed to a set of double doors at the back of the room, staffed by two more servants. Sometimes I just head in there and work out. Put on some music and we have ourselves a nice atmosphere. I might challenge my bodyguards from time to time.’ He smiled at the men walking next to and behind him. ‘We’re not as bad as you may think. I’m not a monster.’

‘I must say, I've heard a lot of things about Snoodum but your nation in my opinion is great! However, as you know, Ashoy is a democracy and as such, people have the right to curse me out in the public and still walk away with pride. You are lucky on this front. Anyone speaks any ill about you and they are gone for good and that is something I've always longed for.’ The man laughed, somewhat hysterically and Snudgeskooge angled an eyebrow at him, quickly dropping it when his compatriot had stopped. ‘Your Majesty, we still believe in basic human rights that every citizen should get but we don't bother forcing nations to implement the same. However, it has been brought to my attention that more than two-thousand Snoodians have been tortured and, if that is indeed true, I urge you to reconsider these acts. I am open to you on this front as I consider you a friend with whom I can speak openly. Nevertheless, Ashoy is always open for business. We consider you as an important ally and wish to build a friendship that will last for an eternity!’

The two of them got to the polo equipment room at the far end of the sports building, and more servants opened the door. ‘Your Divine Imperial Majesty. Your Excellency.’ Snudgeskooge thanked them before heading in, the smell of lavender wafting up to them both.

I like to teach people one on one and find out where they are, and what they want to know, but not everyone has discord.

I just dropped some data on a person to help them after asking them some questions, but I saved it as a reference in case anyone wants it.

Introduction

Doctrine is based mostly on three things: What a nation is capable of, what a nation's biggest and/or most common threats are, and how a nation can take what is capable of and counter big and/or likely threats.

I actually had a video on this, but it's a tiny bit cringe because of age and that was before I learned more about public speaking. Actually no, I redid those, audio is kinda echoey though, not sure why.

To attempt to be brief, a good example of a Doctrine came from Lubyak. Lubyak stated on their doctrine that they believed the most probable, serious threat was an invasion by one or more nearby nations, which were economically or technologically more advanced, and they believed any possible wars would happen within Lubyak territory. Their solution was attempt to squeeze their resources and try to make the most of them, while also making use of their own territory and their superiority in numbers.

Think of it as the basics of what Sun Tzu taught. Know your strengths, know your weaknesses, know your enemies' strengths and weaknesses. Bolster your strengths, cover your weaknesses, dimish the strengths of your enemies, and exploit their weaknesses.

Tactical Situation, Top and Bottom

Now doctrine feeds into the "top and bottom end" of the tactical situation. At the top, you have divisions which are around 10,000 people and they used to be the smallest unit that could be deployed into a far away land. They would typically be two thirds one thing, and one third another, but sometimes it was three fourths and one fourth.

My video also goes into this, but again, too long.

The US has moved onto Brigades, but that's a lot harder to setup and is harder to explain, so I am going to pretend their Brigades are divisions, like they used to be.

The US currently has about half a million in the Army, with the bulk of that being logistics or people currently at home. They aren't the most helpful resource for nations with billions of people, and equivalent per capita military spending. You're going to see why in a second.

The US has Armored Brigades, Styker Brigades, and Light Infantry or "Humvee" brigades. We can convert these into divisions and use them to understand how you or other NS nations might do things.

Division Types

"Light Infantry" divisions, mostly revolve around infantry on food, which may or may not be using pickups, 4X trucks, Humvees, Landrovers, or MRAPs. These units are cheap and typically are used by the US for patrols or to get into areas that are tricky to get into. If you aren't "nation-building" or trying to fight in places that heavier vehicles can't get into, you might have light infantry units be purely special forces, reserves, or national security units (India deals with a lot of terrorism and has military police divisions).

Also, I want to reference that Paratroopers, "Mountain" infantry, "Air Assault" (Deploys by Helicopter) and so on are also Light Infantry. The US has a whole division that deploys by Helicopter, and it used to be a Paratrooper division.

"Mechanized Infantry" (If we use the US/NATO meaning) units revolve around Armored Personnel Carriers (APC), which is an armored box on treads or typically 8 wheels. In the past they had little armor and were used as "battle taxies" but lately they've had a lot more armor and have gotten a lot more mobile as well. The Stryker is a good example because the unmodified version can technically be stuffed into a medium-sized plane and flown half way around the world, but the vehicle can fairly easily be mounted with add-on armor that provides a good bit of protection. The Mech Inf division is typically the "bread and butter" of most armies, as it's able to do almost everything reasonably well.

"Armor" Divisions or units, revolve around tanks, typically MBTs for richer nations and medium tanks like the T-55 for poorer ones. These divisions might be 1/3rd tanks or 2/3rd tanks, but at least a quarter of the unit is Infantry Fighting Vehicles (IFVs) and logistics for those units, typically being whatever portion isn't tanks or logistics or support units.

IFVs have 20, 25, or 30mm autocannons. They're like a smaller automatic tank gun or a really large, slower firing machine gun. Most of them also fire guided missiles. Almost all of them have enough armor to stop their own autocannon, at least from a distance. The downside is they carry less people.

My video goes into cavlary, airborne, heavy armor/breakthrough, and artillery units as well. Again, too long, don't have time, you're busy, I'm busy. Just remember that what kinds of divisions you have and how many you have, is based on how mobile you need units to be, and how much you can afford. Some nations are top to bottom armor divisions as much as possible, because they see wars being fought over small spaces, and they are made of money. Armor divisions take FOREVER to get places, especially by boat. Most of the tanks in the US get around by railway, because they tear up roads. If tanks don't tear up the roads, the roads tear up the tanks.

Squads

Let's get down to squads real quick before you lose the will to live and/or enter a coma.

A squad/fireteam of infantry is sized based on however many people you can stuff into the vehicle they use to get around.

What I mean by this is, if the Humvee holds a drive and gunner, along with three others... so perhaps a fireteam might be three to five people. If that is the case, perhaps your squad is 6-10 people. If you have a vehicle and it holds less then seven people, including the commander in a turret, that vehicle is holding a fireteam. If a vehicle holds seven to 12 people, that's a squad.

So example, Styker holds nine people (Not including the crew) including the commander of the vehicle, so those units have nine men squads. Bradley and Puma IFVs carry six people, but the commander of the vehicle could be the Sergeant of the squad, and thus be the seventh man.

Quick rules for how a fireteam or squad is "layed out". A fireteam always has one LMG or GPMG, in the same caliber as the service rifle, if possible. If you can't get the same caliber, you use .308 or 7.62x51mm. This is how things have been done in most the world since 1945ish. If your fireteam has at least four people, one of them is is the fireteam leader, and one of them is carrying an underbarrel grenade launcher (If you can afford it). In the US army, GL and fireteam leader are same person. In the US Marines, they are separate people. Most of the world copies the Germans from WW2 and has everyone carry as much spare LMG ammo as they can, typically at least a 100 round belt or two 45 round magazines (Maybe 50 round belts if it's heavy .308 or 7.62x51mm)

Soviet squads or seven men squads are tricky. Soviets would only have one LMG and always have an RPG-7. Typically anti-tank weapons are only issued out if tanks or vehicles are a serious concern. Also, a lot of nations issue out disposable launchers and have the vehicle carry them in case someone needs them, such as the LAW, RPG-18, ect ect. I advise you always bring two LMGs if you can, unless you absolutely have to have a dedicated two guys with an RPG-7 or equiv in your squad.

Conclusion

That's the fundamentals for you. Let me know if I talked down to you or went way over your head. I know a lot of this might seem like too much nit-picking, but I think that little stuff like this can make your nation seem way more capable in RPs, way more interesting in writing, and can be quite easy to do if you get down to it.
