The Empire of Grid 32 is a huge, environmentally stunning nation, remarkable for its ubiquitous missile silos, restrictive gun laws, and devotion to social welfare. The hard-nosed, cynical, humorless population of 330 million Griddies are ruled with an iron fist by the dictatorship government, which ensures that no-one outside the party gets too rich. In their personal lives, however, citizens are relatively unoppressed; it remains to be seen whether this is because the government genuinely cares about its people, or if it hasn't gotten around to stamping out civil rights yet.

The large, corrupt, socially-minded, well-organized government juggles the competing demands of Education, Healthcare, and Law & Order. It meets to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Cell 8. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 68.0%.

The strong Griddian economy, worth 25.4 trillion Times a year, is driven entirely by a combination of government and state-owned industry, with private enterprise illegal. However, for those in the know, there is a large, well-organized black market in Information Technology, Arms Manufacturing, Cheese Exports, and Door-to-door Insurance Sales. The private sector mostly consists of enterprising ten-year-olds selling lemonade on the sidewalk, but the government is looking at stamping this out. Average income is 76,928 Times, with the richest citizens earning 5.5 times as much as the poorest.

The government only invests in infrastructure after a natural disaster, the military recognizes no difference between male and female soldiers, editorials that criticize the government are legally obligated to display the "pants on fire" warning, and Occam's razor has sliced to pieces any childhood belief in Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy. Crime, especially youth-related, is totally unknown, thanks to a well-funded police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Grid 32's national animal is the Cat, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests.

Grid 32 is ranked 261,765th in the world and 4,875th in The East Pacific for Nicest Citizens, with 0.86 average smiles per day.
