Rally Series to Begin Across Fennoscandinavia in September
Autumn and Winter Series returns as drivers prepare for gravel, rain, and rapidly changing autumn conditions.
HELSINKI — The Fennoscandinavian Rally Championship will return in September with the opening round of the Autumn and Winter Series, marking the beginning of the Republic’s annual rally season. Six rounds will take competitors across forest roads, gravel stages, and rural communities throughout southern and central Fennoscandinavia before the championship transitions into its winter calendar. Organizers expect hundreds of thousands of spectators to attend stages throughout the season. The Autumn Series is regarded as one of the country’s most demanding motorsport competitions, with drivers facing rapidly changing conditions as summer gives way to colder temperatures, heavy rainfall, mud, and increasingly limited daylight. Teams will compete using specialized four-wheel-drive rally cars prepared for high-speed gravel stages, with mechanical reliability considered just as important as outright performance.
The championship will also serve as the first half of the combined Autumn and Winter Series, with the overall Fennoscandinavian Rally Championship determined by points accumulated across both seasons. Following the conclusion of the autumn rounds, teams will have several weeks to prepare for the far more demanding winter events, where snow, ice, and temperatures well below freezing will replace the gravel and mud. The Ministry of Culture and Sport described rallying as an important part of Fennoscandinavian sporting culture, particularly in rural communities where stages regularly bring spectators, teams, and visitors together. “Rallying reflects something familiar to Fennoscandinavians,” Minister Sofia Nieminen said. “It requires preparation, technical skill, endurance, and the ability to remain calm when conditions become unpleasant. We consider that a fairly accurate description of our national character.”
The opening round is scheduled for the first weekend of September, with organizers expecting roads surrounding the stage areas to become heavily congested as spectators arrive from across the Republic. Local businesses, hotels, restaurants, and service stations are preparing for increased activity throughout the championship. President Aatos Vainola and Prime Minister Ilmari Saaristo are expected to be there to launch the Autumn and Winter Series, as is a long held tradition.

The Home Secretary is responsible for policies relating to - among other subjects - immigration. You will have heard the news that HM Government instructed the Home Office to review the current legislation in that area of interest. As this policy will undoubtedly have an influence in our bilateral relations, and because we remain ever willing to keep these as warmly as possible, I write this letter to you.
It is not unlikely that the policy review will point to the possibility for UK Authorities, such as the Coast Guard and Border Patrol, to tow or push boats back to your internal waters, since those are the waters that these illegal immigrants came from. It is also possible that tighter border checks will be imposed by the Home Secretary. We acknowledge that this may affect your country('s political situation). May we therefore invite you to a brainstorm session at the Department of State for External Affairs (Foreign Office) to discuss these and related matters?
Deliberations will be held prior to the drafting and presentation of the review. We will take your views into our highest consderations. The discussions will of course be held confidentially in private.
