National Pharmacy Technician Day

Pharmacies are busy places. Pharmacy technicians perform vital duties in support of pharmacists — counting pills, entering patient data, waiting on customers, and explaining the use and effects of drugs and medical devices. Pharmacies couldn’t run without them, and they deserve a day of appreciation for all their tireless work! And yes — we need their help!

National Pharmacy Technician Day – History

1884
First pre-measured pills

The first pre-measured medication tablets, made possible by industrial technology, appeared on shelves.

754 AD
First pharmacies

The world's first drug stores appeared in Baghdad. By the ninth century the government regulated them.

1550 BC
First pharmacological textbook written

The Ebers Papyrus, the earliest known written collection of medicinal plants, was written in Egypt.

National Pharmacy Technician Day Activities

Buy a gift
If only we could tip pharmacy techs! Failing that, a teddy bear, balloon, box of chocolates, or a nice flower to brighten up their workplace (artificial, so as to keep things clean) is sure to light up their day.

Get a flu shot
National Pharmacy Techs Day happens to land right in the run-up to flu season, and most pharmacies offer flu shots. Seeing your pharmacy tech for a flu shot now is a great way to ensure you don't have to see them under less happy circumstances later.

Just say "thanks"!
Pharmacies can have hundreds of people in and out in a single day, and most of those customers aren't there to socialize. Simply taking the time to tell a pharmacy tech you appreciate them can make a pharm tech's day.

3 Fun Facts About Pharmacies

The "Rx"symbol is actually an abbreviation
In medieval medical texts, which were, of course, mostly written in Latin, "Rx" was short for "recipe," or the imperative form of the verb "recipere," meaning "to take." It literally means "take this!"

Agatha Christie's "other" career
Agatha Christie, the best-selling author of all time, worked during World War I as a pharmacy tech for a hospital, dispensing medication to wounded soldiers.

Many soft drinks were once medicinal
Among the many modern soft drinks originally developed by pharmacists and sold in pharmacies are Coca-Cola, Dr. Pepper, and tonic water.

Why We Love National Pharmacy Technician Day

Pharmacy techs do grueling work
It is usually the pharmacy techs who actually count out and/or measure our medication. If it were not for their tireless attention to detail, our health could be in danger.

Pharmacy techs work long hours
The average pharmacy technician works long shifts — eight, 10, even 12 hours — on their feet. And because many pharmacies are open 24 hours a day, pharmacy techs often work nights and weekends, all so that we can have our medication as soon as we need it.

Pharmacy techs are unflappable when we're feeling bad
Let's face it — no one goes to the pharmacy because they're feeling good. More often than not, we're sick, cranky, and we want to get out of there. Pharmacy techs know this, and provide us with the service we need and the smiles we want on our worst days.

National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day

The loss of an infant is devastating. National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day honors those lives lost to miscarriage, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, stillbirth, the death of a newborn, and more. On October 15, take the opportunity to reflect, honor, and come together over pregnancy and infant loss. If you have a loved one who has experienced this loss, take the time to give them the love and support needed to process and recover.

National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day – History

2004
International Wave of Light began

The International Wave of Light encouraged those observing the day to light a candle at 7pm in order to create a wave of light across the world — and to honor pregnancy and infant loss.

October 2002
National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day was established

Robyn Bear, Lisa Brown, and Tammy Novak began the movement to bring awareness to pregnancy and infant loss across the nation.

October 25, 1988
Presidential recognition

President Reagan marked October as Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month.

How to Observe National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day
Participate in a "Walk To Remember"

Various nonprofits host walks to honor and remember pregnancy loss and infant death. Proceeds are typically donated to advocacy and awareness groups.

Remember your baby
Take some time to honor your baby by planting a memorial tree, journaling, or picking out memorial jewelry. These activities can help as you go through the healing process.

Learn more about pregnancy and infant loss
Every year, about 90,000 infants die before the age of one, and at least 10 percent of known pregnancies end in miscarriage. Knowing facts like these can help you understand the scope of this loss.

3 Stars Who Have Suffered Miscarriages

Beyonce
Beyonce's HBO special "Life Is But A Dream" honors the baby lost in her miscarriage and talks about the difficulty of grieving and healing during this time.

Gabrielle Union
Gabrielle Union opened up about her struggle with miscarriages, revealing that she has had eight or nine and was in an almost-constant cycle of IVF for years trying to get pregnant.

Giuliana Rancic
Rancic spoke about her miscarriage in 2010, hoping to raise awareness about the issue and help women cope.

Why National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day is Important

It allows parents to grieve in different ways
Many parents feel they have to grieve silently. This day provides parents with the space to come together and grieve openly about their loss — or to look for support from those to whom they may not normally turn.

It provides a caring touch
Talking about pregnancy and infant loss is a very emotional subject, so many choose not to say anything at all. National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day helps those who have experienced loss to express their feelings about it, while teaching others how to be supportive.

It features a candlelight vigil around the world
National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day includes a candlelight vigil beginning at 7pm local time. It is observed in the U.S., Europe, and Africa.

National Latino AIDS Awareness Day

National Latino AIDS Awareness Day is observed annually on October 15, or the last day of National Hispanic Heritage Month. In 2015, this segment of the population accounted for about one quarter of all new diagnoses of HIV in the U.S. Local organizations across the country use the day to launch prevention campaigns, offer counseling and testing, and hold cultural events.

National Latino AIDS Awareness Day – History

October 15, 2003
First National Latino AIDS Awareness Day

The U.S. launched its first National Latino AIDS Awareness Day. By this point, there were more cases in African-American and Latino people than white people.

1988
Concern grows about exposure in minorities

The Centers for Disease Control launched a TV campaign about the impact of AIDS on minorities.

December 1, 1988
World Health Organization declared the first World AIDS Day

The world's first AIDS Day was recognized as part of an attempt to bring awareness to the disease. WHO says that AIDS cases have increased 56 percent worldwide.

June 5, 1981
HIV was on the CDC's radar

The Centers for Disease Control issued the first warning about a rare form of pneumonia, later determined to be AIDS-related. Health officials believe it had been spreading for years before this warning.

How to Observe National Latino AIDS Awareness Day
Contribute to an event

Local organization and community centers across the country hold events in observation of National Latino AIDS Awareness Day. Contribute by volunteering, going with a friend, or posting the event info online. Remember, it's about both prevention and treatment.

Get the word out
Many cases of HIV/AIDS are mishandled or not diagnosed. Spread the word that free testing and counseling are available.

Be supportive
You may or may not know someone battling HIV/AIDS. Either way, you can be supportive. Reach out to someone who is dealing with it and let them know you understand.

4 Prominent Figures In The Fight Against HIV
Rock Hudson

Before his death in 1985, Hudson went public with his AIDS diagnosis. He was the first major public figure to do so.

Martin Delaney
Delaney was one of the original AIDS activists. He lobbied the government and FDA to fast-track treatments and experimental drug trials. He also smuggled treatment drugs in from Mexico in order to conduct his own trials.

Elizabeth Glaser
Glaser founded the Pediatric AIDS Foundation after she and her daughter contracted HIV from a blood transfusion. At the time, her daughter had no medical options, because there hadn't been any trials done on treatment for children.

Magic Johnson
Johnson risked career damage and public backlash when he revealed his HIV diagnosis in 1991. He went on to create the Magic Johnson Foundation, which tackles HIV/AIDS through education, testing, and treatment.

Why National Latino AIDS Awareness Day is Important

It's a warning for some
A quarter of new HIV/AIDS cases are diagnosed in Latino/Hispanic individuals — despite this group making up just 18 percent of Americans.

Helpful information
According to the Centers for Disease Control, just 83 percent of Hispanic/Latino Americans with HIV/AIDS are diagnosed. Campaigns like this help those living with the disease — without either knowing or managing it — find the proper resources.

We all need to know
Americans of any race or heritage can learn about how the disease is impacting friends and neighbors.

National White Cane Safety Day

National White Cane Safety Day on October 15th annually celebrates the achievements of people who are blind or visually impaired. The day marks the importance of recognizing the white cane. The white cane is not only a tool. It also represents the independence of those who are blind worldwide.

This day has been set aside to celebrate all of the achievements of people who are blind or visually impaired, and the principal symbol of blindness and tool of independence, the white cane.

While technological advancements continue to improve the lives of the blind and visually impaired, the white cane continues to be a basic necessity for leading an independent and productive life. The white cane extends a person’s senses allowing them to determine steps, unlevel pavement, and obstacles. But it also provides a level of safety as a signal to the seeing public. It’s important not to disrupt the path of someone with a white cane or to steer them in another direction. A skilled user allows the cane to find the clearest way.

HOW TO OBSERVE #WhiteCaneSafetyDay
The best way to provide assistance is by keeping aisles and doorways clear of boxes and other debris is one good first step. However, the day primarily focuses on the independence and equality of those with visual impairments. Their vision shouldn’t be a hindrance to attaining their goals and dreams, and the white cane symbolizes those achievements. Use #WhiteCaneSafetyDay to post on social media.

NATIONAL WHITE CANE SAFETY DAY HISTORY
A joint resolution of the United States Congress H.R. 753 was signed into law as Pub.L.88-628 on October 6, 1964, and codified at 36 USC § 142. It was this resolution that authorized the President of the United States to proclaim October 15th, White Cane Safety Day annually.

Within hours of the passage of the joint resolution, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the first proclamation for the observance.

This Day was also named Blind Americans Equality Day, in 2011, by President Barack Obama.

There is always so much more one can do to make a difference. For more information regarding White Cane Safety Day from the National Federation of the Blind.

There are over 1,500 national days. Don’t miss a single one. Celebrate Every Day® with National Day Calendar®!

World Food Day

Where would we be without food? We certainly wouldn’t be at Starbucks, grocery stores or restaurants. We wouldn’t, in fact, be anywhere for very long, because we need food to live. Food is seen as a basic human right, and yet one in nine people globally experience chronic hunger. As far back as 1945 the United Nations recognized food as not a privilege, but a right, and that’s why they created World Food Day, observed annually on October 16, in 1979. It’s a day of observance to draw attention to the plight of the hungry. So, today, join us in eradicating hunger.

How to Observe World Food Day
Give to a local food bank

In the United States it's estimated 1 in 7 people rely on food banks as their primary or supplemental food source—many of these are working families who suffer from underemployment and cannot afford the groceries needed to help their family live healthfully. The top requested items for food banks are healthy, non-perishable items high in protein, such as canned or dry beans, peanut butter, rolled oats, low-sodium soups and vegetables and tuna canned in water.

Support small scale farms
Ninety-eight percent of the farms in the world are family farms. They usually practice sustainable agriculture with plants that are indigenous to the area, rotating crops and limited use of pesticides. Sadly, many family farmers are unable to produce the variety of crops needed for their own survival and without support, can suffer from malnutrition themselves. On World Food Day, shop locally and support family farms.

Raise money to end hunger
On World Food Day there are typically a number of food drives. If you don’t know of a local food drive, organize one yourself and donate the food to a local food drive. Globally there are hunger walks, World Food Day dinners or food packaging rallies. Get involved and let’s end world hunger!

Why World Food Day is Important

It helps raise awareness
Millions of people suffer the health consequences of malnourishment, which damages growing bodies and brains. That's why it's important to draw attention to this health crisis—and by doing so, ensure food security and availability of nutritious foods to everyone on the planet.

It’s a reminder hunger can be ended
Our planet currently produces enough food to feed every person on the planet. However, 1.3 billion tons of food is lost or wasted annually (that's roughly 20% of the food produced). World Food Day acts as an impetus to get involved, reduce food waste, and help provide sustenance for millions.

It brings attention to eating mindfully
Food is a great source of pleasure and entertainment, but sometimes we can overindulge. if we return to the focus of eating mindfully we can reduce the amount food that's wasted and the number of people going to bed hungry. World Food Day serves as a reminder to refrain from overeating and to make choices that are ecologically sustainable.

National Boss’s Day

What is National Boss’s Day?
October 16th is National Boss’s Day, a chance to celebrate the people who keep us gainfully employed! “Boss” has been used as slang to describe something cool or excellent, so if you are blessed with a great boss, you could call ‘em a boss boss. Whatever you call them, do a little something for the boss in your life

National Boss's Day - History

In 1958, Patricia Bays Haroski registered National Boss’s Days as a holiday with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in honor of her father, who was also her employer. She created the holiday to improve office relationships between supervisors and their employees as well as raise cognizance to all the hard work boss’s put into their jobs. She felt as if younger employees didn’t appreciate their bosses enough, and knowing first hand what her father went through to make a company run smooth, set out to change that viewpoint. However, it wasn’t until Illinois Governor Otto Kerner supported Haroski’s registration four years later, that the day officially became a national holiday.

National Boss's Day FAQs

Is today National Boss's Day?
National Boss’s Day comes around on October 16 every year. Show your boss how much you appreciate them and all the work they do.

Why do we celebrate Boss's Day?
National Boss’s Day is celebrated in order to strengthen employee/employer relationships as well as show appreciation to the bosses in our lives.

Who started National Boss Day?
Patricia Bays Haroski created National Boss’s Day in honor of her boss, who also happened to be her father

Is Boss's grammatically correct?
“Boss’s” is grammatically correct when using the possessive noun. “Bosses” is the plural form of the noun.

National Boss's Day Activities

Chip in to make their days great
In honor of the day, why not get a cute greeting card for you and all of your coworkers to sign? Or pitch in to buy a fun gift or something that they've talked about needing. Have a hard-to-buy-for boss? Consider making a donation in their name to a local charity.

Tell them what they mean to you
Send your boss a heartfelt email telling them how much you appreciate them. If you’re feeling fancy, you can write an old-fashioned letter thanking them for the inspiration and dedication they've shown to you. Either way, they'll appreciate you appreciating them.

Help out on the job
Unless you know your boss’s tastes in books or flowers, try an intangible gesture. Ask them what step you could take to make their job easier. The reply might be something as simple as showing up on time or making sure the printer paper gets refilled—but it could also be a chance to grow as a professional and take point on a daily report or a quarterly goal. Either way, the offer to go above and beyond will doubtless be appreciated.

Why We Love National Boss's Day

They gave us our jobs
They hired us, pay us, and keep our workplace afloat. It’s a lot of responsibility to manage other people, but someone's got to do it!

They take the blame when things go badly
When the client backs out or the contract is lost, odds are your boss is the one going under the bus. Bosses fall on their swords for us more often than we may realize, and they understand that it’s part of their position to do so. Now go and buy them some thank you chocolate!

They are mentors and more
The best bosses are excellent judges of character and can see our potential, sometimes even before we do. Many of them take immense pleasure in helping younger, less experienced colleagues develop their own abilities, network, and generally succeed in their field. And, by doing so, they can boost your career into the stratosphere. If you’ve found a boss like that, consider yourself lucky!

National Mulligan Day

Everyone deserves a second chance. This October 17, celebrate National Mulligan Day and enjoy the comfort in knowing that if at first you don’t succeed, you’ll get another crack at it. Though often associated with getting a “freebie” after a less than desirable golf shot, National Mulligan Day applies to any undertaking in which you would care for a “do-over.” Mulligans are for those with the determination to fight through the adversity of the mishaps of life. Let’s be honest — we all need a mulligan from time to time.

National Mulligan Day – History

July 1985
David Mulligan confirmed his reputation

In July of 1985, journalist Don Mackintosh interviewed David Mulligan for a column, “Around the Sport Circuit," where David confirmed stories about his “additional shots."

1940s
The USGA approves

The United States Golf Association claims that the term first achieved widespread use.

1930s
Mulligan theory #1

Some golf historians give credit to John A. “Buddy” Mulligan, a locker room attendant at
Essex Fells C.C., New Jersey for the word.

1920s
Mulligan theory #2

David Bernard Mulligan, a Canadian golfer and one-time manager of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City, would often ask for a second shot off the first tee, coining the term “mulligan."

1793
Mulligan theory #3

Yet another version of the truth about the origin of the term “mulligan” states that it comes from Thomas Mulligan, a minor Anglo-Irish aristocrat and passionate golfer.

National Mulligan Day Activities

Play a round of "mulligan" golf
The term “mulligan” is originally associated with golf, so why not use it on a course. Gather up some friends, have some laughs, and enjoy a round of golf where you only keep score with the shots you like.

Have a leftover party
Enjoy round two of your previous meals and taste just how good a “second helping” can be.

Try something new, and master it
Though it may take some time to master, think about how amazed friends will be when you can show off your new skill in public.

5 Inspiring Second Chance Quotes

David Millar (professional cyclist)
“People for make mistakes and I think they should be punished. But they should also be forgiven and given the opportunity for a second chance. We are human beings.”

Pete Rose (retired professional baseball player)
“If someone is gracious to give me a second chance, I won’t need a third.”

Dave Wilson (author)
"Sometimes life gives you a second chance, or even two! Not always, but sometimes. It's what you do with those second chances that counts."

Marc Platt (producer)
“When a writer gets a second chance to look back on something, it’s a great opportunity to say, ‘Hey, this is really good, but we can do it even better.’”

Tia Mowry (actress)
“Having a second chance makes you want to work even harder.”

Why We Love National Mulligan Day

Second chances are for everyone
Although we all want to get things right on our first attempt, immediate success is rare. Embrace your human faults, and rather than admit failure, take a deep breath and try again to get it right.

Everyone does it
Realistically, we not only need more than one try to achieve our goals, we often surpass them with practice. No one, ever, has done everything in their lives perfectly on their first try. So don’t fret: The “try, try again” club is a big one.

It’s a sign of friendship
A mulligan, more than anything, is accepted cheating. Mulligans are not secretive or sneaky. They're a blatant disregard for the rules that a competitor happily ignores — with the understanding that they may ask for the same kindness later.

National Straight Edge Lifestyle Day

The straight edge lifestyle means refraining from alcohol, drugs, and tobacco. Would you believe a sub-genre of hardcore punk rockers inspired this movement? It’s true. On October 17, celebrate National Straight Edge Lifestyle Day by resetting your mind and body — and exploring a unique way of life. If you always live the straight edge, this is a great time to encourage your friends to try it with you. Look no further for plenty of ideas and activities to make National Straight Edge Lifestyle Day special.

National National Straight Edge Lifestyle Day – History

The 2000s
Some added veganism

By the early 2000s many people in the movement added veganism to their straight edge lifestyles. Although not officially part of the movement, some began to refer to themselves as vegan straight edge — or with the symbol xVx.

1999
National National Straight Edge Lifestyle Day was born

Although people had begun to live the straight edge lifestyle in the 1980s, the movement gained traction in the 1990s. National Straight Edge Lifestyle Day was created in 1999 in Boston during an event called Edge Fest.

June 1981
A punk band went "straight"

The hardcore punk band Minor Threat first released the song "Straight Edge" in 1981. The term was soon adopted as a title for the movement to refrain from using drugs, alcohol, and tobacco.

National Straight Edge Lifestyle Day Activities

Write down your experience
National Straight Edge Lifestyle Day celebrates restraint and reflection. If you're trying it for the first time, look back on your experience at the end of the day so you can remember how it made you feel. If you've been straight edge for a long time, use this day to reflect on your journey and how living straight edge has changed you.

Make some mocktails
If you normally like to unwind with an alcoholic beverage, you can still get creative making a fun drink for yourself. Try making a virgin lemon drop by shaking lemon juice, simple syrup, and water and pouring it into a sugar-rimmed martini glass. Invite your friends over and throw a mocktail party on National Straight Edge Lifestyle Day!

Go straight edge together
For some, the straight edge lifestyle might sound intimidating. Make it fun by grabbing a good friend and trying it together! You can share tips and reflect on the experience so you'll feel positive and motivated throughout the day.

3 Celebrities You Didn't Know Were Straight Edge
Bradley Cooper

After he felt like his drinking and partying were becoming too wild, the film star made the decision to become sober and live straight edge.

Steve Aoki
While attending UC Santa Barbara, Aoki adhered to the vegan straight edge lifestyle.

Phillip Jack Brooks or CM Punk
The retired professional wrestler embodied the straight edge movement in the ring, but now also adheres to the principles in his daily life.

Why We Love National Straight Edge Lifestyle Day

Straight edge is healthy
When you live without drugs, alcohol, and tobacco you may notice improved sleep and increased energy. Living straight edge helps you stay in control of your mind and body and might even prevent a substance abuse problem.

Straight edge saves you money
When you don't spend money on cigarettes or alcohol, you can save a lot. For example, having one or two glasses of wine during the week can add up to hundreds of dollars by the end of the month. Think about all of the other things you could be doing with this money, such as planning a vacation or buying tickets to a concert.

Living straight edge gives you a different perspective
Whether you've lived straight edge for many years or celebrate once a year on National Straight Edge Lifestyle Day, living the straight edge lifestyle can open your eyes to a different way of living. Take time to enjoy the simple things in life without any distractions!

National Pay Back a Friend Day

After conducting an in-depth study on how money affects relationships, Bank of America designated October 17 as National Pay Back a Friend Day. This study, which is called the “Friends Again Report,” found that 53% of its participants have ended a friendship after they loaned a friend money and were never paid back. As a way to combat this issue, National Pay Back a Friend Day was created. So on October 17, put away the bad feelings, pull up your mobile payment apps, and start paying your (ex) friends back.

National Pay Back a Friend Day – History

2017
Another payment app popped up

Zelle, a payment app owned by many of the big banks (Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and Chase to name a few), launched a person-to-person payment system.

2012
PayPal came out on top

Braintree acquired Venmo for $26.2 million. (PayPal later bought Braintree for $800 million.)

1998
The trailblazer for online payments launched.

Did you know PayPal started under the name Confinity?

How to Observe National Pay Back a Friend Day

Pay back a friend
Obviously, the best way to celebrate National Pay Back a Friend Day is to pay back a friend. And thanks to all the apps out there these days, finding someone is easy — and so is paying them back.

If you can’t pay them back (yet), find other ways
Offer them free babysitting. Or dog sitting. Or whatever. Just be sure to acknowledge that they loaned you money — and thank them for helping you out.

Organize your finances
Use National Pay Back a Friend Day as an opportunity to figure out other debts you may have (credit card, money you may owe to family members, student loans, etc.) and make a proactive plan to get caught up.

4 Reasons To Keep Friends And Money Separate

IOUs can leave a friendship MIA
Nearly 80 percent of Americans feel that owing a friend money is bad for their friendship.

Millennials have a bad rep
Lots of people believe that millennials are the demographic that will most likely not pay a friend back.

Apparently there’s a price on friendship
Nearly half of all Americans are willing to terminate a friendship because of money.

People have lost thousands to friends
The amount of money people claim they’ve loaned to friends—and were never paid back—averages out to $2,092.

Why National Pay Back a Friend Day is Important

Debts cause stress—this can help alleviate it
Losing a friend over money is stressful. This day puts us on the road to healthier friendships — and finances.

It helps improve your communication skills
Talking about money is hard — especially with a friend. National Pay Back a Friend Day is a reminder to step out of your comfort zone and acknowledge the awkward feelings.

It can help mend lost friendships
If you’re feeling regret about a friendship lost due financial issues, National Pay Back a Day Friend is the perfect time to reach out. And if things don’t go the way you planned, at least you can have peace of mind knowing you tried.

National Clean Your Virtual Desktop Day

There are exactly 365 days in a year, yet most of us neglect the condition of our computers. Technology is more advanced than ever, so we have become accustomed to not maintaining them. Thanks to the good folks at the Personal Computer Museum, of Ontario Canada, that has changed. On the third Monday of October, people celebrate National Clean Your Virtual Desktop Day by doing just that — making sure their desktops are cleaned.

National Clean Your Virtual Desktop Day Activities

Back up your files
If you rarely clean your desktop, then it is safe to assume that you barely back up your files. So here’s an idea; do both! Back up your files to a secured hard drive and delete them from your computer.

Organize your things
Question, can you see the background picture on your desktop? Or is it being camouflaged by the army of documents on your screen? If the answer is yes, then SMH. Clean it up! Organize your files by archiving them into folders.

Let it go
Let it go, let it gooooo! Sorry, that song is catchy so we couldn’t help but reference Frozen. All jokes aside though, let go of those files you’ve been holding to. Do you really need that screenshot from 3 years ago? Trash it if the answer is no.

Why We Love National Clean Your Virtual Desktop Day

More speed
The logic behind this is quite simple; the more things you have stored on your computer = a slower running machine. This because more RAM is being used. For those that do not know what RAM is, think of it as horse power. The heavier your car weighs, the more horse power you use to travel. Clean up your computer as if it were a tune up and get up to speed.

More space
We’re just stating the obvious folks. Clean up your computer and gain more space on your computer! As mentioned above, this will make your computer quicker, plus it will give you more space to store the important documents you want - as opposed to the Rachel Ray recipe from 2008. (We love you Rachel, that wasn’t shade!)

Fresh start
Do you remember how quick your computer was when you first purchased it? Probably not, since you haven’t cleaned it in years! Get a fresh start by emptying the trash. Start over by being more organized this time. Label your documents appropriately and make it easy for yourself when you need to find them.

International ShakeOut Day

Drop, Cover and Hold On! If nothing else, remember to take those three steps if and when an earthquake strikes. They’re crucial in order to prevent the chances of severe injury or even death. International ShakeOut Day on October 17 reminds us of the importance of taking immediate action. This day, which falls on the third Thursday in October, remains our best opportunity to learn (and practice) how to protect ourselves. Earthquakes can happen anytime. Remember, even if you’ve experienced them before, a false sense of security can prove fatal.

International ShakeOut Day - History
2004
Monster earthquake

An earthquake recorded underneath the Indian Ocean created enough energy to power all homes and business in the U.S. for three days and caused a series of tsunamis.

1960
Going beyond earthly expectations

One of the largest earthquakes recorded, a magnitude 9.5 in Chile, shook the entire earth for several days.

132 AD
Measuring seismic waves

Geographer Zhang Heng is regarded as the first inventor to create a seismoscope. The scope resembled a wine jar with dragon sculptures jutting out on all sides. Each of the dragons held a metallic marble in their mouth, and depending on where an earthquake hit, these marbles would fall out and determine the direction of the surrounding tectonic plates.

How to Observe International ShakeOut Day

Take part in the drills
Millions learn how to take cover during an emergency. These drills are held every year on October 19 at 10:19 am.

Practice earthquake preparedness
You can learn about where the closest shelters and food clinics are located, or if there are new protocols for your region. It is super important to know the latest version of safety procedures so you're not caught unprepared.

Stock your safety kit
Pack a safety kit if you don’t have one prepared already. Most standard packs include a pair of clothes for each family member, a tool kit, canned goods, important documents, and electronic power chargers. There will be items in your pack specific to where you live.

5 Reasons Earthquakes Leave Us Rattled

They can occur anywhere
Currently, there are twenty tectonic plates covering the earth; however, scientists predict some plates may break into smaller sections.

Living in the danger zone
Records show most deaths do not occur from the direct impact of an earthquake, but instead from collapsing buildings, and surrounding manmade structures.

Meeting in the middle
Parkfield, California's referred to as the earthquake capital of the world because of its location along the San Andreas Fault.

Catching the untraceable
Scientists are able to determine the exact point on the earth’s surface where an earthquake originated by tracking the different speeds of traveling seismic waves.

The Great Shaky North
Alaska is one for the most seismically active regions in the world — experiencing magnitude 7.0 earthquakes nearly every year.

Why International ShakeOut Day is Important

It helps us learn what to do — and what not to do
The key to preventing chaos in times of emergencies is to ask if you and your family are prepared. It is possible to be distracted by daily living and never be ready for a quake. Preparations include aftermath drills, such as first aid and first response.

It’s a great introduction to children about an earthquake's impact
By observing this holiday, you can start introducing the topic of natural disasters to children. While they are being prepared at schools, they can also learn how to react in these situations if alone at home, or with siblings.

It helps us remember those who endured natural disasters
Recognizing the importance of International ShakeOut Day gives us a reason to reach out to those experiencing natural disasters currently, and those who have endured them in the past. On this day we reflect on what our priorities are, and how we want to be prepared in the future.

Nyah ha ha ha! We have a Winner! Stars and Suns Imperium has won this round of BINGO with a Quadruple Bingo. Congratulations Buddy! :)

Winners do not go away empty handed - They must win a prize and for winning a Quadruple Bingo, your prize will be FOUR cards from my deck of Trading Cards on my nations: Fort Verden, Elven King Thranduil and Little Thranduil. Except the cards in the Cards Gifted To Me By My Sons collection. Choose your prizes and I will send them to you Buddy.

Ladies and Gentlemen of Texas,

We will take a break from our Regional BINGO Game until next Monday. I will accept that there could be more than one winner. Everyone who has at least one BINGO will have until this Sunday to post in our RMB to claim your prize(s).

It is not an easy job. However, someone needs to do it. Preferably someone that has some feeling left in them and is able to handle the situation with love and compassion.

ROFL! Day isn't going to do it. We're talking at least a week.

Dude, I’ve got the love and compassion needed to handle the situation but I don’t think I’m ever gonna have the courage and guts to tell a Mom I can’t save her baby cause the baby’s been dead for too long. :(
